Hydrogen-fuelled drones among exciting innovations presented at Monaco Hydrogen Forum

Could hydrogen-powered drones provide a solution to cutting emissions caused by the transportation sector? One company attending the Monaco Hydrogen Forum certainly thinks so.

Now in its second year, the Monaco Hydrogen Forum, which is being hosted by the Hôtel Hermitage’s Salle Eiffel between 27th and 28th November, has set itself the lofty ambition of contributing “to reversing the curve of the environmental impact of mobility in our societies thanks to renewable hydrogen”.

Transportation currently accounts for an estimated 25% of all carbon emissions, so the replacing of fossil fuels in this ‘sector’ with cleaner and greener options, such as hydrogen, would provide a considerable step towards lowering overall emission levels and have a big impact on national decarbonisation strategies.

One company to take this challenge head on is Heven Drones, which presented its latest generation of sleek hydrogen-fuelled drones on the first day of the event. The ground-breaking range could, according to the company, “revolutionise the drone industry and redefine the possibilities of hydrogen-powered flight”.

One half of the range, the smaller H2D200 drone, can carry payloads up to 4.5 kilograms and has an astonishing 510-kilometre range with extended flight times of up to four hours. To top it off, it is remarkably precise and can hover with accuracy.

The larger drone, the H2D250, can carry up to 10 kilograms for 750 kilometres. It has an operating time of up to eight hours whilst maintaining precision.

Together, the two new devices could open the door to a variety of applications, such as an eco-impactful method of making multiple deliveries.

“The Age of Hydrogen is upon us,” says John Rossant, the president of Monaco Hydrogen Alliance, which is behind the pioneering event. “The most abundant element in the universe now holds out the tantalising promise of being one of the most important keys to a cleaner and more sustainable planet.”

The rowing world’s elite are heading to Monaco for the Prince Albert II Challenge this weekend, which will feature a traditional endurance race alongside sprints, mixed doubles and solo competitions.

Now in its 18th year, the Prince Albert II Challenge is set to bring a dramatic conclusion to the rowing season over two days, from 2nd to 3rd December.

BIG NAMES AND BIG PRIZES

As every year, the Challenge has attracted some pretty serious contenders, and organisers say that there will be a total of 110 participants making up 22 teams from 18 nations in the 2023 edition.

Of these, there are 24 world champions, 10 Olympians and the two Tokyo Olympic medallists Marieke Keijser and Magdalena Lobnig.

The healthy cash awards will see the winning team take home €4,000, while the second placing team will receive €3,000. The team in third will get €2,000 and there is also a €1,000 prize for fourth.

UNIQUE FORMAT

Teams are made up of two women, two men and a cox, who can be any gender. At least one member of the individual teams must take part in each of the Challenge races.

The races themselves will be a mix of four-kilometre endurance races in the waters off the Principality as well as 500 metre sprints as tests of speed.

Each race counts for the general classification and the team with the greatest number of points at the end will win.

The Sunday finals are to be held along the coastline, rather than offshore, for better spectator viewing, and drones and on-boards will also be used in order to live stream the races as they happen on YouTube and Facebook.

Presidential dinners from Prince Rainier III’s time to be recreated by Monaco’s finest chefs

As part of the Prince Rainier III centenary celebrations, three Michelin star-winning chefs from the Société des Bains de Mer group are honouring his memory by “perfectly reproducing” menus served to French presidents during the late ruler’s reign. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming ‘Presidential Dinner’ experiences.

The Prince’s Palace was host to three presidents of the French Republic during Prince Rainier III’s time as Monaco’s Head of State.

Charles de Gaulle was first, on 23rd October 1960, followed nearly a quarter of a century later by François Mitterrand on 19th January 1984. Finally, it was the turn of Jacques Chirac, who came to visit on 25th July 1997.

Beyond being purely diplomatic visits, these trips were marked by a shared appreciation for joie de vivre and excellent gastronomical taste; sentiments set to be revived anew during the ‘Presidential Dinner’ experiences planned for the month of December.

THREE PRESIDENTS, THREE CHEFS

To celebrate the art of fine food in the Principality, and in memory of Monaco’s so called Builder Prince, three of Société des Bains de Mer’s (SBM) finest chefs are set to recreate the meals enjoyed by these historic leaders in days gone by.

From 4th to 10th December, Chef Marcel Ravin will be taking on the meal created for President de Gaulle at Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort’s Restaurant L’Orange Verte. Dinner is €199 with a wine pairing option for an additional €75. To book a seat, click here.

The next location will be Le Grill at the Hôtel de Paris for Chef Dominique Lory’s menu in homage to the meal shared by Prince Rainier and President Mitterrand. Reservations for dinners between 11th and 17th December cost €450 per person. To reserve a table for a minimum of two, click here

Last but not least, Chef Yannick Alléno will serve the carte offered to President Chirac at the Pavyllon restaurant in the Hôtel Hermitage from 18th to 23rd December. This meal will be accessible to parties of two or more for €450 per person. For reservations, click here

With three such incredible moments in time being revisited by these inspired and inspirational chefs, why not give them all a try this holiday season?

20 kids given the thrill of a lifetime at ‘They are the Champions’ charity event

A group of disadvantaged children chosen by Monaco-based charity Les Enfants de Frankie were given a very special day out in late October when they were treated to a driving experience at the Prestige Karting du Luc track.

It all began in 2021, when ‘gentleman driver’ Philippe Demanet and Thierry Revel, a former head concierge at the Hôtel de Paris, took part in the E-Rallye Monte-Carlo.

Looking for a cause to back, they settled on local association Les Enfants de Frankie, which has been supporting sick, disabled and disadvantaged children in Monaco and throughout the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region since 1997.

In the years since, Demanet and Revel have collaborated with the association on a number of special experiences. That first year, for example, they invited children affiliated with Les Enfants de Frankie to Monaco’s Casino Square to get signed copies of the popular Antoine the Pilot comics. 70 children went home with smiles that day, spurring the men, along with Marie Dubos, to create an annual event benefitting Les Enfants de Frankie.

Around 20 disadvantaged children were invited to take part in the fun event. Photo provided

In 2022, Prestige Karting du Luc came on board and, with the help of drivers who generously donated their time, the ‘C’est eux les Champions’ event – ‘They are the Champions’ in English – was born.

Partnerships with Hertz Monaco and Hertz France also helped make it possible, and Amore Mio and Costa Monaco provided refreshments. All have continued their support into 2023.

Co-pilot for the day

Having had time to refine the event, the organisers of the 2023 edition on 25th October gave 20 children chosen by Les Enfants de Frankie the opportunity to become co-pilots alongside experienced volunteer drivers, giving these kids the thrill of their lives.

The fell-good event is held with the grateful support of its partners

Local YouTuber Seb Delanney, who has a global following as one of the most influential car-spotters around, was also on hand with a magnificent Alpine A110.

The organisers are already looking forward to next year’s event, with hopefully more cars, more children and more partners.

World Young Chef Young Waiter Awards unite the next generation in high-end hospitality

Amid rumours that the event could soon become a Netflix show, the World Young Chef Young Waiter Awards that spotlight rising stars in gastronomy, service and mixology were held at the Hôtel de Paris at the end of last week. Here are the winners.

The World Young Chef Young Waiter (WorldYCYW) Awards, replete with a splendid dinner gala honouring all those involved, were held in the stunning Salle Empire inside the Hôtel de Paris on Friday 24th November.

“The flow of young talent is evident here, as we showcase the emerging superstars of tomorrow,” Robert Walton MBE, the chairman of WorldYCYW, told Monaco Life on the night. “Achieving our ambitious goals [to grow the competition] over two years reflects the hospitality industry’s dynamic power and our commitment to nurturing a contemporary and sustainable hospitality community.”

22 entrants from nine countries worldwide featured on the shortlist, but in the end, it was one nation in particular that dominated.

Mixology award triumph: Zana Mohlmann’s victory

Singapore’s Zana Mohlmann, who is the Head Bartender at Manhattan Bar, won the mixology competition. She clinched the title with a unique cocktail that featured Neft vodka infused with pine needles, a snow frost element and forest wood aroma blended with American whiskey.

Mohlmann told Monaco Life, “Having the opportunity to present my cocktail creations to such an esteemed panel of judges [Anna Sebastian, Paul Robinson and Yann Bouvignies] was a true honour.”

Top hospitality is a “team sport”

The Chef and Waiter Award is a celebration of the collaboration possible between culinary and service professionals.

Adam Handling, a judge representing the chef profession, praised the quality of each of the entries, noting the importance and essential nature of strong partnership between chefs and waiters. Meanwhile, Simon King, who was judging the service aspect, described good hospitality as a “team sport”.

In a first for the event, the third place was shared by two teams. Representing England were Benjamin Mabley and Jade Walker, while the Welsh team included Sam Everton and Carys Webster. The USA team, which took second place, featured Marcus Youn and Regina Gutierrex. The top honour, however, went to Singapore’s Ian Tan and Belle Torres.

Upon receiving the award, Belle Torres shared her heartfelt emotions with Monaco Life, saying, “The win was beyond my expectations. I poured my heart into this competition, preparing as best as I could. I’m thrilled about the future possibilities this victory opens up.”

Ian Tan, reflecting on his achievement, expressed to Monaco Life his dedication and cultural pride: “Entering this competition, I gave it my all, aiming to showcase a piece of my homeland. It’s important to embrace and take pride in our roots, no matter where we come from.”

Expanding horizons

Following the success of this year’s edition, the competition is set to grow next year with participation expected from 15 countries.

The managing director of WorldYCYW, Sean Valentine, also disclosed plans to pitch a show related to the event to Netflix. A trailer is reportedly in the works.

Photos: Prince Albert II in Malaysia on a diplomatic and environmental mission

Prince Albert II of Monaco is currently in Malaysia on a mission to foster closer relations with the Southeast Asian nation and find out more about its policies on the environment and animal protection.

When Malaysia’s King Abdullah of Pahang extended an invitation to Prince Albert, Monaco’s sovereign gladly took him up on the offer to visit the beautiful nation and landed in the capital of Kuala Lumpur on Sunday 26th November, with plans to remain until Wednesday 29th November.

This official visit has several focuses, namely the bolstering of both economic and political ties between the countries and the sharing of information on Malaysia’s local initiatives in favour of biodiversity and the safeguarding of endangered animals.

NEW CONSULATE

There are administrative aspects to the trip too, including the inauguration of a new Honorary Consulate of Monaco, as announced by the Palais Princier de Monaco on social media.

“Prince Albert II arrived in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for a three-day State Visit,” shared a Palace spokesperson. “Invited by His Majesty King Abdullah, the Sovereign Prince began the programme of His trip by inaugurating the new Consulate of the Principality of Monaco placed under the direction of Mr. Sri Naresh Mohan, [who was] recently appointed Honorary Consul.”

On Monday 27th November, Prince Albert attended a welcoming ceremony followed by a state banquet hosted by King Abdullah and his wife, Queen Tunku Azizah, at the National Palace.

The national anthems of both countries were sung followed by a symbolic firing of canons. The two leaders planted a fruit tree native to the region, a Pokok Keranji, before Prince Albert was invited into the inner rooms of the National Palace for a ceremony in which he was given the “highest distinction of the country” by King Abdullah.

BUSY SCHEDULE

The Prince will not slow down with his appointments in the coming days as he is set to participate in the Monaco Economic Forum Kuala Lumpur 2023 meeting, which is being put on by the Monaco Economic Board and will gather local entrepreneurs to discuss the business possibilities that exist between the two nations.

Before departing, Prince Albert is due to accompany the Malaysian King on a tour of the Malaysian Tiger Conservation Centre and the Kuala Gandah National Elephant Conservation Centre, both located in the Sultanate of Pahang.

The streets of Monaco were alive with cycling fervour as the third edition of Beking Monaco unfolded on Sunday 26th November.

The event culminated in a thrilling Pro Criterium race, where cycling superstars took centre stage. Peter Sagan claimed victory, while Tadej Pogačar came a close second to round off a remarkable season that saw the Monaco-based athlete achieve a historic double victory at the Giro di Lombardia.

Official report confirms pilot involved in fatal Monacair helicopter crash had taken cocaine

Almost a year to the day since the pilot of a Monacair helicopter and his passenger lost their lives in a crash just outside of Monaco, the full details of the incident have been confirmed in an official report from the BEA civil aviation authority.

On Friday 25th November 2022, the pilot of a Monacair helicopter en route from Lausanne in Switzerland to the Principality of Monaco was killed along with his sole passenger, the Russian businessman Vyacheslav Taran, when the aircraft they were travelling in collided with the mountainside above the village of Eze-sur-Mer.

Within hours of the incident, rumours had begun to circulate online as to the causes of the fatal crash, but now, almost exactly a year on from the tragedy, the official investigation into the incident has made its findings public.

Investigation reveals details of the crash

On Friday 24th November 2023, the French Bureau d’Enquêtes et d’Analyses pour la Sécurité de l’Aviation Civile (BEA) published its long-awaited report. In it, the BEA ruled that the collision was an accident, but acknowledged that there had been numerous factors at play.

“Flight under the influence of drugs, entering a cloud layer, loss of visual references and loss of control, [and] collision with terrain” were all identified as contributors in the report, which for the moment is only available in French.

Around an hour and a half into the flight, as the Airbus EC130 helicopter operated by Monacair neared the Principality, the aircraft is understood to have entered into a thick cloud layer that obscured the pilot’s vision.

Within minutes, and following a series of sudden and abrupt movements that caused various warning and alert systems to kick in, the helicopter had crashed upon impact with the rocky mountainside.

Pilot under the influence

The 35-year-old French pilot had 2,360 hours of flying experience under his belt and had joined Monacair just over a year prior to the accident. The BEA report confirmed that he had undergone anti-drugs training whilst working for the Monaco-based company and had previously submitted a number of obligatory test samples that had returned negative results.

However, the report confirmed that the pilot had consumed cocaine within hours of the crash, and perhaps as recently as the very morning of the incident.

It also confirmed the presence of cocaethylene in his blood system, suggesting that alcohol had also been consumed recently. Traces of cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) were also recorded. Samples of hair taken from the pilot indicated a presence of CBD and benzoylecgonine, which suggests that he was a regular user of cocaine and CBD products.

Monacair CEO responds to the report

In comments quoted by the Monaco Matin, Monacair CEO Rémi Bouysset said of the results of the investigation, “I am shocked and angry. Safety is our No.1 priority. Being a pilot is a lifestyle choice, and is incompatible with taking any illicit substance. Today, my thoughts are with the passenger’s family, as well than that of the pilot.”

F1: Charles Leclerc takes second in Abu Dhabi and reflects on a tough season

2023 has been the Year of the Red Bull, but Scuderia Ferrari’s Monaco-born Charles Leclerc has fought tooth and nail at every stage, and rounded out the season with a solid P2 to P2 at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina circuit.

In the words of the Scuderia Ferrari team, the race in Abu Dhabi on 26th November was “not the most exciting race”.

“Charles [Leclerc] tried to pass Max Verstappen at the start, after which he concentrated on managing his tyres and the gap to those behind, at first the two McLarens and then George Russell in the Mercedes,” said the team in a post-race statement.

“I had a very good car and the strategy was the right one,” said Leclerc in the aftermath of the race. “My second place was never in danger.”

The goal was clearly to secure second place for Ferrari in the Constructor Standings, but it wasn’t to be.

26-year-old Leclerc eluded to the strategy in post-race comments, saying, “In the end, Checo’s (Perez) five second penalty cost us a lot. Towards the end, I tried to help him to build a gap over George (Russell) so that he could wipe out the penalty and finish ahead of the Mercedes, which would have put us ahead of them in the classification.”

But that didn’t happen, in part due to a difficult race for Leclerc’s team mate, Carlos Sainz, and Scuderia Ferrari ended the 2023 racing season in third position in the Constructor Standings. Leclerc, who celebrated Ferrari’s ninth podium in 2023 at the Abu Dhabi track, ultimately finished in fifth in the Driver Standings following a particularly shaky first half of the race calendar, while Sainz ended the year in seventh.

“Looking back at the season, we can say it has been positive,” said Leclerc. “We started the year with a car that we could not push to the limit. We knew what the problem was, but it took a while to change things. From Japan onwards, my Ferrari became a very different car, capable of very good results. Unfortunately, over the course of the year, there were several occasions when we were in a strong position, but left points on the table: I’m thinking of my retirement in Bahrain when I was third, or in Brazil, where I qualified on the front row but I never actually started the race. I hope that, over the winter, we will be able to put everything we have learned to good use in order to be competitive right from the start of next season. We want to give something back to our fans for all their continued support.”

In the spotlight: The Principality’s very own craft brewery, the Brasserie de Monaco

Every year, more than 100,000 litres flow through the taps of the Brasserie de Monaco, an enterprise with more than 100 years of history crafting top quality lager, beer and ale. Here’s a closer look at the how the business is going today.

The Brasserie de Monaco first opened way back in 1905 at its original premises in Fontvieille. It was forced to close up shop in 1972, but that would not be the end of the road for the company.

In 2008, local businessman Gildo Pastor recognised the growing public interest in craft beers and revived the brand by launching it anew on the Route de la Piscine of Monaco’s famous Port Hercule.

Over the last 15 years, the Brasserie de Monaco has gone from strength to strenght, becoming an ever-popular drinking destination for the thousands of visitors and residents looking to quench their thirst after a day pounding the streets of the Principality or working hard behind their desks.

Brewmaster Valentin Khun, alongside brewer Maxence Valat, takes great pride in creating a top-quality range that includes a lager, a pale ale, a wheat beer, and for the holidays, a festive, seasonal Christmas beer.

ORANGIC AND SUSTAINABLE

The Brasserie uses exclusively organic and sustainably sourced ingredients in its beverages, and to prove there is absolutely nothing to hide, the gleaming stainless steel vats are part of the interior décor.

The outside terrace is a fantastic place to see and be seen by passers-by on the port, with the likelihood of running into a friend or two on the high side given its open aspect.

To accompany the fine beers, the food at the Brasserie de Monaco is prepared with a focus on local fare and an ethos to please all. As such, patrons will find everything from pizzas and salads to burgers, fish and chips, escalope à la milanaise and a generous entrecôte steak on the menu.

A sunny afternoon is the perfect time to drop by for a relaxed beer, but the Brasserie de Monaco is also a great destination during prime times of the year. The bar is pumping for Grand Prix, due to its excellent location, and is a hot favourite amongst sports fans thanks to the big screens. For music lovers, there is an in-house DJ and the party often continues well into the wee hours.

AWARDS

All this work and effort, on the part of Pastor, vice presidents Jérémy Lombart and Louis Brenot, and the brewing team, has clearly paid off, as the brewery can boast several awards, including a 2010 Fourquet d’Or prize for its Pilsner, another in 2014 for its lager, as well as a World Beer Awards gold medal the same year. In 2016, the Brasserie de Monaco came home with a silver medal from the Concours International de Lyon for the lager and the team also won the Fourquet d’Or for its pale ale. The latest prize was from this earlier year, when the Brasserie’s lager was once again in the spotlight in Lyon, winning a silver medal.

Prince Albert and Princess Stéphanie unveil ‘Avenue Rainier III’

Prince Albert II and Princess Stéphanie of Monaco have unveiled a plaque that marks a street in Peille that has now been officially renamed after their father, Prince Rainier III.

On 7th August, the Peille Municipal Council unanimously voted in favour of Mayor Cyril Piazza’s proposal to name the road leading to the Monte-Carlo Golf Club ‘Avenue Prince Rainier III’.

Numerous dignitaries from Monaco and the Alpes-Maritimes were present during the unveiling of the inaugural plaque on Saturday 25th November, which has been placed in front of the entrance to the club.

In 1957, Prince Rainier III established his family’s second home in Peille. He was very attached to the town and donated an organ from the chapel of the main Palace to the parish.

Relations between Monaco and Peille date back to the 12th century, at a time when the Grimaldis had not yet established sovereignty in Monaco, and when the consuls of Peille had ceded their rights over the Rock to the commune of Genoa.

In 2019, in memory of ties strengthened over the centuries, Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene of Monaco unveiled the commune’s plaque belonging to the network of Grimaldi Historic Sites of Monaco. Mayor Cyril Piazza is the current president of the French national association of Grimaldi Historic Sites.

Anna Lunhu: “It’s beautiful to show that you feel good in your skin, to be your best self at your age”

Helping people achieve “better ageing” from the inside-out is Anna Lunhu’s mission. As the founder of Glam Medi Spa and Glam Monte-Carlo told Monaco Life, today’s trends are all about ageing gracefully, naturally.

Anna says she was charmed by the beauty of the French Riviera when she arrived here in 2010; inspired by the region’s glamourous women like Princess Grace and Brigitte Bardot, and bolstered by the seemingly endless possibilities to enjoy life to the fullest, in style and in luxury.

She wanted to capitalise on the way Monaco and the French Riviera made her feel, so she created an elegant, state-of-the-art beauty salon, which offered luxury treatments and impeccable service.

But it was Anna’s personal journey with infertility that steered her focus to engineering optimal health, performance and state of mind through a 360° approach.

“I think it’s more beautiful for women or men not to hide their age and pretend to be someone else, because it’s fake. It’s so nice to say ‘I am this age’, and to show that you feel good in your skin, and to be the best you can be at your age, to feel and look the best.”

It is just over a year since Glam Medi Spa was launched in Beausoleil. It came after the birth of Anna’s second child, a “miracle” baby one could say, because traditional doctors had told Anna that, 16 years after the birth of her first child, she would not be able to conceive naturally again.

“Then I happened to meet a doctor and fertility specialist in Moscow who looked at my blood work and said it was no wonder I couldn’t get pregnant because I was lacking the basic minerals and vitamins,” Anna tells Monaco Life. “So, I changed my lifestyle habits and nutrition, underwent detoxification, and took the vitamins and minerals that I needed. Two months later I got pregnant naturally.”

It is the driving force for Glam’s “inside-out” philosophy to achieve “better ageing”. At Glam Medi Spa, aesthetic medicine meets cutting-edge preventative medicine, with dermatologists, cosmetologists, plastic surgeons, nutrition experts and specialists in endocrinology and biohacking on hand to prevent and reverse ageing externally, but also internally.

“I realised that by optimising and balancing our internal systems, we can already achieve so much.”

In a situation that rarely exists outside of a hospital, collaborating doctors at Glam Medi Spa are able to delve deeper into the workings of the body by conducting blood, saliva and urine tests.

“There are some things that normal beauty treatments can not address,” says Anna. “Beauty often comes from the inside. If someone has problems with their skin or weight, for example, it is often related to hormonal issues or health problems, but it can also be a a lack of vitamins, minerals or nutrition. So, a doctor can contribute to achieving the best results”.

After analysing the tests, the experts devise a personalised plan to achieve detox, weight loss or an energy boost, for example.

The rising popularity of IV drips

Favoured among celebrities such as Rihanna, Chrissy Teigen and Simon Cowell, intravenous treatments have become hugely popular for people suffering everything from a hangover and jetlag to vitamin and immune deficiency. Across the globe, IV has become a mainstream option for consumers and is no longer just associated with celebrities or jet-setting executives.

IV drips are popular because they bypass the digestive system and deliver a high dosage of vitamins and nutrients straight into the bloodstream.

A doctor’s consultation is mandatory at Medi Spa in order to receive an IV drip and, suggests Anna, should be selected as part of an overall health programme. Possibilities include an After Party Drip and Stamina Drip.

Treating hair loss after 40

Many people think of hair loss as a male problem, but it also affects at least a third of all women. As women enter their 40s, their menopausal phase begins and oestrogen and progesterone levels decrease in the body, causing hair thinning.

Some of the trending treatments today are Glam’s platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections. Popularly known as vampire therapy, it uses one’s own blood cells to stimulate hair growth. PRP has also become a popular treatment for many conditions in sport medicine, regenerative medicine and aesthetic medicine. PRP is also used by Glam practitioners in natural facelifts.

Hormone therapy

Ageing and reproduction are intrinsically linked, and studies show that menopause may quicken the pace of ageing.

According to Anna, the specialists at her clinic are able to delay menopause and therefore slow the ageing process by testing bio-markers and genetics, and applying natural treatments for women in peri-menopause.

Hormone therapy also has a whole range of added benefits, including increased energy and improved sleep, mood stability and the reduction of fat levels.

Alternatives to botox

While botox is by far the most popular cosmetic nowadays, there are other options for those looking for a more natural facelift. They include face lifting massages, facelift acupuncture, microneedling collagen induction therapy and luminotherapy.

“People today really want to go back to natural treatments,” says Anna. “Many people do botox – which relaxes the muscles – and the natural way to relax face muscles is the face massage. I’ve had clients who came out crying because they could see such a big change after the treatments.”

What does the future hold?

It’s only been a matter of months since Anna opened another Glam Monte-Carlo, this time in the Fairmont Hotel. While medical treatments are not available here, traditional hair and beauty spa treatments collide with other aspects of the Medi Spa to offer clients treatments like hair botox and hair nanoplasty.

With a Glam Medi Spa and Glam salon also now in Cannes, one could expect Anna to continue rolling out the Glam franchise in other key areas.

But longevity is Anna’s new buzzword, and discovering the best “better ageing” therapies is her mission.

“I am very passionate about it, I am following my dream,” says Anna. “My purpose is to find the best therapists so I can guarantee the quality of the treatments to our clients, and maybe I can help them to look more beautiful, more glamourous, by helping them be the best version of themselves that they can be.”

Sustainable meat alternatives on the agenda at Agri Food & Green Tech

Nearly a dozen innovative start-ups from South Korea headed to the Agri Food & Green Tech Innovation Expo in Monaco last week to discuss and present their ideas for sustainable meat alternatives and packaging solutions that could transform the consumer experience.

With demand for eco-friendly and sustainably produced meat alternatives at an all-time high, the race to produce the best – in terms of flavour and cost, for the producer and the consumer – is on.

On Thursday 23rd November 2023, the Agri Food & Green Tech Innovation Expo was held in Monaco’s Le Méridien Beach Plaza. Organised by White Castle Partners, the one-day event featured the latest innovations from nearly a dozen South Korean start-ups, with at least three focusing exclusively on the urgent matter of providing advanced alternatives to meat.

Sustainable meat alternatives

Foody Worm is leading the charge in the insect protein market, advocating for a shift towards insect-based alternatives in protein consumption. The company’s approach focuses on zero-waste agriculture and aims to lessen the environmental impact of traditional meat production by presenting insects as a viable and eco-friendly protein source.

In the cultured meat space, SuFab, a new R&D company, is making strides with its third-generation alternative meat. SuFab’s technology, still in the early stages of patenting and investment, produces a product similar to whole cuts of beef in just a month; a timeframe considerably shorter to the year-long process of traditional beef production. It is hoped that the company’s innovative range will ultimately offer the taste and texture of real beef with a reduced environmental footprint.

Meanwhile, another company that attended the event is trying to target environmentally-conscious meat eaters with a wholly plant-based product. Millennial Flavor Town’s Hanwoo Steak Dish is the first of its kind, and combines mushroom fermentation technology with beans and coconut oil to create a product the company says replicates the unique flavour and marbling of Hanwoo steak.

Other start-ups present

Alongside meat alternative innovators, other start-ups at the event showcased a diverse range of environmental solutions.

Repla, for example, presented a plastic recycling technology that hopes to enhance recycling rates through plastic purity improvements, while Roots Lab introduced an eco-friendly product range derived from upcycled pear waste, which is supporting farmers local to the business.

FutureSense offered a digital transformation platform for the food industry, which focuses on blockchain and AI to manage food regulations and reduce waste. Neuro Pack demonstrated a natural extract-based packaging material that can extend food shelf life as well as achieve carbon-neutral packaging goals.

Sweetnswitz introduced Makji, a low-gluten and high-protein ingredient from upcycled rice wine by-products alongside a Fine Food Lab product called Purrot Hemp Milk, which is a plant-based milk alternative that balances taste and nutrition while addressing environmental concerns.

Collectively, the companies involved highlighted a range of innovative approaches to the sustainability challenges faced by multiple industries and simultaneously demonstrated the support for these developments and advancements that is to be found in Monaco.

Princess Charlene has delighted residents and patients at the Cap Fleuri aged care facility, joining volunteers from the Chien de Coeur association and their furry friends on a recent visit.

Chien de Coeur is a Moneqasque association that organises visits for volunteers and their dogs to meet and bring cheer to elderly members of Monaco’s community.

On Thursday 23rd November, Monaco’s Princess Charlene accompanied the volunteers and chatted with the residents and patients at the CHPG’s Cap Fleuri.

As a dog lover, the princess was clearly delighted to meet the furry volunteers also.
