Opéra de Monte-Carlo’s Cecilia Bartoli to star as Cleopatra in ‘Giulio Cesare in Egitto’

Part love affair and part political alliance, the story of Julius Caesar and Cleopatra is one that has intrigued and fascinated generation after generation for more than 2,000 years. It was transformed into a dramma per musica by George Frideric Handel in the 18th century, and now is coming to Monaco for four performances at the end of January.

First performed on a London stage in 1724, at the King’s Theatre of Haymarket, Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto was a popular opera for the next decade, but fell out of favour somewhat until it was rediscovered by the avid opera community in the 1970s.

A star-studded cast and team

Now Davide Livermore has taken the tale on, reimagining it for a Monaco audience with the support of conductor Gianluca Capuano and the Opéra de Monte-Carlo’s very own director, Cecilia Bartoli, who is set to hold one of the lead roles as Cleopatra. Countertenor Carlo Vistoli will star as Julius Caesar.

“My point of reference is always the score, and only the score, so the first thing I do is study the music,” says Livermore of the new production. “My job is to understand the intentions of the composer and librettist, and then translate it into a form that speaks to a modern audience. An artist always communicates with the people around him… so if Handel or Verdi presented things to their own audience, I have to find a way of telling mine what they had imparted to theirs and why.”

The three-act opera depicts the treacherously romantic relationship between Caesar and the notorious Egyptian queen, and takes place during the Roman Civil War of 49BCE and 45BCE.

It follows a young Cleopatra on her quest to depose her brother to become Queen of Egypt, and Caesar’s part in helping her get there.

Giulio Cesare in Egitto will be performed on 24th, 26th, 28th and 30th January. A gala night will coincide with the opening performance.

Houda Bakkali releases new augmented reality art series in Monaco

Artist Houda Bakkali is launching a new exhibit called ‘Monaco with Heart’, combining her signature mix of virtual and the physical to create a unique show of art.

Houda Bakkali’s artworks, boasting bursts of colour and inventiveness, are intended to make her audience give pause. Her latest show, an ode to one of her favourite places in the world and called ‘Monaco with Heart’, is no exception.

Already previewed at private events during the holiday season, the public will now have the chance to enjoy these new pieces both in person as well as virtually.

Bakkali, who calls this exhibition her “fetish work” has been hard at work putting the finishing touches on the show and is now ready to take it to a wider audience.

“I have been working on this for several months and I have finally been able to present it in the place where it was born and where it belongs,” she said. “This series reflects my passion and my connection with Monaco. Here I presented my first work in augmented reality in the first contemporary art salon after confinement in 2020. Some of my most representative works are inspired by Monaco. And here I have exhibited on many occasions at public and private events. Monaco has been part of my career, my inspiration and my personal life since I was a child, since some of my best friends and some of the best hosts of my work are here.”

HER CREATIVE PROCESS

‘Monaco with Heart’ was created as a trilogy that “pays tribute to colour, feminine beauty, the joyful spirit and the dolce vita that Monaco inspires”.

The optimism shines through, and was made using perky themes such as flowers, polka dots, and the Mediterranean Sea to convey a joyful spirit, in what the artist calls “a life designed to be lived with harmony but also with intensity, in the purest Monegasque style, with its sunny days and nights of good friends.”

DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES

The artist has not limited herself in how art can be presented. She embraces innovative technologies, like the use of virtual spaces, whilst respecting traditional processes and techniques.

“Digital art is no longer a trend, it is a reality that is here to stay and that finds its place more and more every day,” says Bakkali. “Public and private institutions are committed to the combination of new technologies and art. The public can experience the potential of digital tools in immersive exhibitions and artists see how new possibilities open up to create and display our works.

“In 2024 I will have the opportunity and honour to develop several projects in this regard in Monaco and bring the public closer to these new technologies through the addictive power of art. Not only with my new series ‘Monaco with Heart’, also through other of my most recognised works.”

Her ambition for 2024 is to reach people far and wide, with the hope she can take this show on the road, with exhibitions in Asia, Latin America, the United States, the UAE and other parts of Europe.

Houda Bakkali also has an upcoming event this month at the Alliance Française for their 40th anniversary celebrations and other shows planned in Paris, Geneva and Italy.

First Mùnegu Repair Café of the year planned for January

From hairdryers and sewing machines to record players and bedside lamps, the expert volunteers who run the Mùnegu Repair Café can fix up a long list of broken or damaged household items that would otherwise be destined for landfill. Here are all the details about the upcoming event.

On Saturday 13th January at the Marché de la Condamine in Monaco, a group of well-skilled volunteers will be setting up workstations and workshops from 3.30pm to 6pm to help locals repair much-loved and appreciated electrical goods that have stopped working properly.

This community-driven event, organised in collaboration with the successful Nice branch of the Repair Café project, encourages sustainable living by offering residents an opportunity to mend or refurbish broken items rather than replace them.

In the past, the Mùnegu Repair Café has proved very popular with the local community so be sure to get there in plenty of time to secure your place in the queue. Organisers are requesting that participants respect the “order of arrival” to ensure everyone can be accommodated efficiently.

Access to Boulevard du Larvotto heavily impacted by ongoing Testmonio II works

Over the next 10 weeks, access to the seafront Boulevard du Larvotto will be considerably limited due to ongoing construction works at the vast Testimonio II development.

Although the works are scheduled to take place each night from 8pm to 6am until Friday 8th March, the heavily used roadway will only be able to partially open by day, according to a statement released by the Monaco Government.

See more: Testimonio II given permission to extend

From 7.30am to 11.30am, traffic will be allowed onto the Boulevard du Larvotto from a Roquebrune Cap Martin direction to facilitate commuters heading into the Principality from the French and Italian communes to the east.

Then, from 11.30am to 7.30am, this will be switched around to ease traffic heading out of Monaco. This will also be the case on weekends.

Between Monday 19th February and Friday 8th March, when the works are due to finish, access to the Parking des Sources will possible uniquely via the Avenue Princesse Grace route.

Once complete, Testimonio II’s 10,000sqm footprint will provide 378 state-owned apartments and 61 prime residences across two towers and its luxury Bay House.

France’s Permis B driving licenses can now be obtained from age 17

As of 1st January, those eager to get behind the wheel in France can do so a year younger following a decision by a government to reduce the minimum age for holding a standard Permis B licence from 18 to 17.

The law is intended to “promote the mobility of young people” – notably those living in more rural areas with little or no access to public transportation options – and make it easier for the country’s youth to get to school or work.

The Permis B allows drivers to handle vehicles up to a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of 3,500kg and with up to eight passenger seats. These drivers may also tow a trailer with an MAM up to 750kg or a larger trailer providing the total MAM of the trailer and vehicle does not exceed 3,500kg. The full list of vehicles can be found here

French driving licences are valid for 15 years from issuance dates and have a probationary period where new drivers are allotted six points initially for infractions, raised by two points each year until they reach the maximum of 12.

“Eternal friendship” of Princess Grace and Maria Callas immortalised in new artwork unveiled in Greece

A new statue by Monaco-based artist Marcos Marin dedicated to the long-standing friendship between Princess Grace of Monaco and opera singer Maria Callas has been unveiled in Thessaloniki, Greece.

The two women shared beauty, talent, successful careers in entertainment, and American passports, so it was not a big surprise that when Academy Award-winning actress Princess Grace and superstar soprano Maria Callas met, they would be fast friends.

Now, a monument to the relationship between these two amazing women has been erected at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall in northern Greece’s capital city.

The sculpture, a creation of Monaco-based Brazilian artist Marcos Marin, is entitled ‘Maria Callas & H.S.H Princess Grace of Monaco, an Eternal Friendship’, and was funded by Clelia Haji-Ioannou, sister of easyJet airlines billionaire Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou.

It was unveiled as part of the centenary celebrations of the birth of Maria Callas, who was born in New York City to Greek parents in 1923, as well as to “symbolise the twinning of the two states of Monaco and Greece”. The event was organised by the renowned Greek-Australian artist Ioanna Efthimiou, founder of the Maria Callas Monaco Gala and Awards, which just had its successful third edition in May.

“The sculpture, which depicts Princess Grace and Maria Callas embracing, symbolises Greece’s friendship with Monaco,” said Efthymiou. “Indeed, Monaco was a very important place for Maria Callas, because it was the only place where she could really rest. She also spent wonderful years there, first with her great love Aristotle Onassis and then alone.”

Photo left to right: Artist Marcos Marin, Founder and President of Brazil-Monaco Luciana de Montigny, Ioanna Efthimiou and Honorary Consul of Monaco to the Hellenic Republic Dr. Vassili G. Apostolopoulos

WHO WAS THERE?

The Honorary Consul of Monaco to the Hellenic Republic, Vassili G. Apostolopoulos, delivered the opening speech of the ceremony, where he spoke of a “collective duty” to honour the memory of “La Divina”, the nickname given to Callas for her stunning voice, as well as the interconnectedness of Monaco and Greece.

He then mentioned the link with 100th anniversary celebrations that have been going on in Monaco for Prince Rainier III in 2023, as well as Princess Grace’s special place as a philanthropist and cultural icon.

Talks were then given by Luciana de Montigny, Founder and President of Brazil-Monaco, with a few words made by the artist, Marcos Marin as well as by Ioanna Efthimiou.

The Consulate of Monaco in Greece was among the supporters of this initiative.

A solemn Prince Albert delivers globally conscious New Year’s speech

Standing alongside Princess Charlene, Prince Albert II of Monaco cut a sombre figure against the glittering backdrop of the Grimaldi family Christmas tree as he delivered his New Year speech.

“Only time, and the necessary benefit of hindsight, can say how we will collectively come to remember the events of the past year,” he began his speech, published on the Palace social networks on 31st December. “Whether on the world stage or in our personal lives, the year will have brought its share of happiness, but also trials, tribulations, and tragedies. The Princess and I want to express our full support, and our deepest compassion and affection, for all those affected by bereavement, suffering, illness and loneliness.”

“We have a shared duty to acknowledge our good fortune”

Dressed in a simple navy blue suit while Princess Charlene opted for sophisticated glamour with a burgundy velvet gown, Prince Albert continued, “These are difficult times, and their consequences are not yet clear to see. Our country has been spared many of the upheavals affecting the world. So we have a shared duty to acknowledge our good fortune, and an ambition too, to remain united, by protecting our institutional model, our social and economic achievements. We must also show our gratitude for these advantages by working together, to pass on what we have inherited to future generations.”

After beginning with a more global view, the second half of Prince Albert’s speech then focused in on Monaco.

“For the Principality, 2023 has also been a year of celebrations, with commemorations marking the centenary of the birth of my father, Prince Rainier III. My family and I are delighted to have shared these moments with you. They remind me how his reign modernised our country by making Monaco a prosperous and dynamic state, outward-looking and active in the concerns of nations.”

The Prince also noted how 2023 had marked the 30th anniversary of the Principality’s accession to the United Nations, a landmark that he personally honoured with a visit to the New York headquarters of the UN.

“Our unity and uniqueness are our shield against the problems that beset so many of our western societies,” he continued, “and I consider it my wholehearted duty to ensure that our community remains cohesive and prosperous.”

Prince Albert then moved to acknowledge the current challenges and conflicts faced by other countries around the world, saying, “History has too often shown how fragile nations can be, and so in an increasingly complex and unstable world, it is vital that we stay the course.”

He then thanked the “women and men who have been entrusted with new responsibilities” and said he knew he could “count on the people of Monaco, our residents, and our partners” to play their part in the unity of the Principality that has endured 700 years.

“We cannot predict the future, but we can prepare for it”

The address ended with sage yet decidedly proactive words from the Prince: “We cannot predict the future, but we can prepare for it. We may not foresee it, but we must create it. The year ahead heralds many challenges, but holds rich promise. We must continue to mobilise our efforts and devote all our energy to the cause of peace, mutual acceptance, and solidarity.”

Turning slightly to face his wife, Prince Albert concluded his speech by saying, “The Princess and I send each and every one of you our very best wishes for 2024. May it bring you happiness, peace, joy and good health.”

The pair signed off by wishing viewers a Happy New Year in French, English and Monegasque.

France: Rules relaxed for 27-year mortgage scheme

Following pressure from financial institutions, banks and mortgage lenders, France’s High Council for Financial Stability (HCSF) has announced a significant change to the rules for prospective homeowners hoping to secure a 27-year mortgage.

It was announced in mid-December that the government would be downgrading the requirements needed to obtain a 27-year mortgage, which are relatively rare in France.

Until the changes were unveiled, those with a 27-year mortgage had to pledge to spend 25% of the total loan on home improvements and repairs. This has now been revised down to 10% of the overall amount borrowed.

The type of improvements covered include modernisation works, the installation of energy-saving and efficiency features, and essential repairs.

The announcement was joined by a statement that bridging loans will continued to be excluded from the total monthly income-debt ratio of 27-year mortgage applicants, which is currently set at a recommended 35% by the HCSF, as long as they “do not represent more than 80% of the value of the sale”.

‘The Travelling Collection’ is back for new season

A collection of captivating stage costumes and accessories from the Opéra de Monte-Carlo is once again making its way around Monaco as part of a unique travelling museum experience for the entire community.

Since 2002, the New National Museum of Monaco has preserved 4,000 stage costumes and 400 set models from the Opéra de Monte-Carlo and offered by the Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer.

As part of this heritage collection, the museum puts together a “study” travelling collection, consisting of around 60 pieces that can be seen, touched and even worn in some cases.

A collection to be enjoyed by the whole Monaco community

Launched in 2018 as part of a project by artist Celia Pym, ‘La collection voyageuse’ offers a series of travelling workshops in educational, associative and medical establishments in the Principality and its surrounding areas.

Accompanying these fabrics, embroideries, headdresses and accessories is the museum’s mediation team, who run creative and hands-on workshops involving a range of art forms that raise awareness of conservation issues and restoration of works among different audiences.

The new season kicked off with a week at the École des Révoires, before being deployed at the École de la Condamine.

‘The Travelling Collection’ is an activity that continues throughout the year.

‘Talents of the Fort’: call for people to join 2024 organising committee

Following its inaugural year in 2023, the Open Stage of the Théâtre du Fort Antoine is back this summer, and the government is looking for people to help out with the organisation of this unique youth-focused event.

Monaco’s Department of Cultural Affairs created the ‘Talents du Fort’ event last year to promote artistic talents and passions among those aged 18 to 30. Participants on stage can represent whatever artistic field they desire, from dance and theatre to music and painting, but those with a talent for event organisation are needed too.

Now, a call has gone out for people to get involved in the creation of the 2024 edition of the ‘Talents of the Fort’.

From registration management to communication, technical support and logistics, the young volunteers will be given a chance to assist with all aspects of the preparation and running of the event and will be able to share their own ideas with its project managers.

The opportunity is open to people aged between 18 and 30 with an interest in culture and event organisation, and who live in Monaco or attended school here. Those with a strong link to the Principality will also be considered. Ideally, applicants should be available for around two hours per week between 15th January and July 2024.

For more information or to register your interest, send an email to fortantoine@gouv.mc before 19th January 2024.

Emissions fell by 4.6% in France in 2023

During the first nine months of 2023, carbon emissions from France fell year-on-year, according to a recently released report from the Interprofessional Technical Centre for Atmospheric Pollution Studies (CITEPA). What contributed to the 4.6% change?

The CITEPA report, which had been commissioned by the French Ministry of the Environmental, was published on 26th December.

The preliminary data included in the report indicates an overall 4.6% decrease in carbon emissions during the first three quarters of 2023, compared to the same time period in 2022, while those behind the report accredited three sectors with helping make the positive change.

The energy sector saw the biggest drop: 9.4% over 2022 figures. Industry came in a close second, showing a 9.3% decrease, while eco measures in the building and construction trade saw its emissions fall by 7.5% cut.

The news prompted French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne to exclaim on social media, “-4.6%! In 2023, our CO2 emissions will continue to fall at an unprecedented rate. We are on the right track for France to achieve its carbon neutrality objectives by 2050. With #FranceNationVerte, this vision is at the heart of our ecological planning.”

Anti-bullying hotline and website for children and teens coming soon to Monaco

Following nearly 40 reports of harassment and violence during the last school year, the Principality is reportedly stepping up its fight against school bullying with the imminent launch of a new support hotline and website for victims.

Aimed at providing immediate support to students suffering at the hands of bullies, as well as offering a safe place for victims and witnesses to come forwards with reports of bullying incidents, the dual helpline and website project marks the next stage in an ongoing strategy to crackdown on bullying in the Principality’s schools.

See more: National Council calls for “concrete actions” to end bullying in Monaco schools

In comments published by the Monaco Matin, Minister of the Interior Patrice Cellario said, “The idea is that we have a single telephone number that is connected to the Department of Education… Outside of the working hours of the department – at night and on weekends – the number will be sent to a partnered association so that the support can be continuous.”

The hotline will reportedly be supplemented by a website that will provide helpful resources and advice to victims of bullying.

A date for the launch of the hotline and website is yet to be confirmed, but Cellario indicated in his comments that it could coincide with the return to school in a few weeks’ time “or in any case later this month”.
