Trenitalia announces plans for two new train lines through the south of France

Two new train links between Italy and the south of France are in the works: one from Milan to Nice via Monaco and a second through the mountains of the Mercantour to the city of Turin. Here are the details we know so far.

The Covid pandemic brought an unfortunate end of the popular Thello train route from the south of France to Milan, but it has now been revealed that Trenitalia is keen to revive the service with the support of France’s SNCF network.

By summer, the Milan to Marseille journey could be a daily occurrence. Although the specific stops along the route are yet to be confirmed, it is very likely that both Nice and Monaco will feature as well as Ventimiglia.

A scenic link to Turin from Nice via Breil-sur-Roya is also in the works and could be operational by summer 2025. The concept is a service similar to the famous Ferroviaire del Bernina express line from St. Moritz in Switzerland to Tirano in Northern Italy, which offers passengers spell-binding views of the Alps thanks to panoramic carriages.

CROSS-BORDER ALLIANCE

The reopening of the Milan connection and the launch new mountain route is something Italy, Monaco and France are keen on. Cross-border tourism benefits all three, and a meeting was held in the Ligurian town of Imperia earlier this month to launch an alliance.

“Alone, we cannot necessarily release significant resources [to run these lines],” long-time Mayor of Nice Christian Estrosi told the press. “Joining our forces will allow us to better finance projects, with very precise timetables.”

Banksy and Invader among the big names at Artcurial’s upcoming urban art auction

A week before the Urban Art Fair in Paris this April, Artcurial will host a vibrant urban art sale of its own in the City of Light. Here’s what to expect from the event.

Urban art – street art to some – is defined as “artwork that is created in a public space, typically without official permission”.

Growing out of the politically motivated 1960s graffiti movement, this rebellious visual art form has evolved with the times to become a genre all of its own – one that is highly prized among collectors and connoisseurs the world over.

In late April, the Carreau du Temple in Paris will be hosting a major street art event, the 8th Urban Art Fair, but fans of the genre will also get an opportunity to snap up some very special pieces a week before at the upcoming Urban Project sale that is being organised by Artcurial Paris.

Set to take place on 17th April and with acclaimed auctioneer Arnuad Oliveux at the helm, the Artcurial auction will feature works by some of the most celebrated street artists of our time, such as Banksy, Futura 2000, JonOne, Shepard Fairey, Vhils and André.

FRENCH INVADER

The French urban art scene will be well-represented at the sale, notably through works by Invader, who has been filling city walls and open spaces with colour since 1996. Up for grabs at the auction will be Rubik Killers, a collection of 441 Rubik’s Cubes on plexiglass, which is expected to fetch between €150,000 and €200,000.

Also on the block will be a mosaic by French street art legend Alias PA_810, which is estimated to sell for €60,000 to €80,000.

OLD SCHOOL

Old school graffiti will also feature in the sales, primarily from American artists. One such acrylic and spray paint work by Futura 2000 from 1987 is thought be worth between €50,000 to €70,000.

There will also be a large canvas by JonOne from 1991 that was made during the Hôpital Éphémère period. Estimates for this piece range from €70,000 to €90,000.

INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS

Works from artists like Shepard Fairey, Vhils, KAWS, Barry McGee, ROA, EVOL and Todd James will be going under the gavel too, but the biggest sales are expected from Banksy.

His 2017 Grappling Hook, a wood, shellac, acrylic, aluminum, polyurethane, synthetic hemp rope and steel work could fetch in the vicinity of €100,000 to €150,000.

New Restaurant: Lunch in the sun at Mr. Nakamoto in Cannes

The sun was shining brightly in Cannes as Monaco Life headed down to the Mondian Cannes, a five-star hotel that opened on the Croisette last spring, to sample the fresh fusion delights of Mr. Nakamoto.

The walk-up to the doors of this premium lifestyle establishment, along a wooden boardwalk and via a verdant garden that stretches back from the bustling Croisette, passes through the outdoor section of the Mondrian’s in-house restaurant, Mr. Nakamoto – our destination on an exceptionally warm day in late February.

The Mondrian Cannes is the only hotel on the Croisette to offer direct access to the seafront and the main shopping zone of the Rue d’Antibes. Photo credit: Cubeddu

Mr. Nakamoto, which is headed up by Chef Jean-Baptiste Guillaume, offers an invigorating blend of Mediterranean and Asian flavours.

The Carte du Midi features a mix of salads, a Poke bowl, a smoked salmon platter with Kalamansi jelly and sakura shoots, and a burger with Kimchi-mayo as well as the highly recommended and beautifully presented sushi range. The Omakase – “I leave it up to you,” in Japanese – plates would be a great choice for a sharing lunch, with a 16-piece platter costing €37 and a larger 32-piece selection priced at €69.

The lunch options are undoubtedly lighter than the evening menu, where the sushi suggestions – we tried the signature rolls with mango, tuna and asparagus, and the French sourced sea bass nigiri – sit comfortably alongside more classically French steak dishes, five-spiced coquelet, Tonkatsu pork with sour cabbage and a favourite among patrons: the lacquered black cod.

Sushi in an array of forms is well-represented on the lunch and dinner menus of Mr. Nakamoto. Photo credit: Cedou

The fusion marriage of flavours and ingredients is continued into the dessert and even cocktail menus of the chef, who tells Monaco Life that the vision he has for Mr. Nakamoto takes inspiration from his many voyages and experiences across the Asian continent.

We chose a Matcha Fizz and a Kirin Ichiban to go with our meal, but could easily have been swayed by the Cho Milk Punch featuring Mezcal, yuzu, kiwi and butterfly pea flower or the Plum Manhattan with Nikki From The Barrel, Umeshu, Sakura vermouth and cherry.

Between sea and shopping

The Mondrian Cannes, which became the group’s first hotel to open on French soil back in March 2023, is found on the site of the former Grand Hôtel de Cannes, which had been the long-standing luxury hotel in the city.

The garden is a true haven in a busy, bustling city such as Cannes. Photo credit: Cedou

It counts 75 guestrooms on its plans, each at least 35 square metres in size, and is the only hotel on the Croisette to offer direct access to both the seafront and the main shopping area of Cannes on the Rue d’Antibes.

Chef Guillaume heads up Mr. Nakamoto while Chef Jérôme Faget is in charge of the hotel’s private beach, Hyde Beach, which is located on the sandy side of the iconic Riviera boulevard. Chef Pierrick Cizeron, who has previously enjoyed a senior position at the Majestic and Gray d’Albion in Cannes, recently joined the team as the Executive Chef of the entire establishment.

Mr. Nakamoto is open seven days a week from 12pm to 2.30pm for lunch and from 6pm until 10.30pm for the dinner service. Click here for reservations or more information about the restaurant and the hotel.

Winter Carnival: a day of fun, costumes and community spirit in Monaco’s markets

On Wednesday 21st February, the markets of Monaco were filled with colour and celebration as families turned out to enjoy the Principality’s Winter Carnival.

Both the Marché de la Condamine and the Marché de Monte-Carlo on Avenue Saint-Charles were alive with laughter and music as parents and their children gathered to watch the dazzling spectacle.

Troupes of stilt walkers, jugglers, contortionists and acrobats put on an excellent show while bubbles filled the air and balloon makers and face painters set up stands in the marketplaces, bringing much delight to the smiling girls and boys who had come along to join in with the fun.

A princess here, a Spiderman there, dragons, Pokémon and unicorns… The children were stars of the show, and many arrived in their favourite fancy dress outfits.

Organised by the Monaco Mairie and spearheaded by local councillor Axelle Amalberti Verdino, who is in charge of Entertainment and Leisure, the carnival is a favourite among families in Monaco and is a wonderful demonstration of the Principality’s dedication to fostering community ties.

Opéra de Monte-Carlo invites Lang Lang for an evening of magic with Cecilia Bartoli

As a prelude to the Bal de Rose Gala in March, the renowned mezzo-soprano and the director of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, Cecilia Bartoli, is to perform at a special sold-out show alongside the internationally acclaimed piano virtuoso Lang Lang.

Since they first met back in 2008 at a concert series celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Maria Malibran, Italian opera star Cecilia Bartoli and Chinese pianist Lang Lang have found themselves in a mutually appreciative relationship based on their unequalled high energies, an adoration of nuances and the fact that they both see ‘colours’ in the music they love.

The admiration that the singer and the pianist share for each other has led to the pair performing together on multiple occasions, the latest of which will occur on 23rd March at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo.

The duo will be performing the opening act for the annual Bal des Roses Gala, the glamourous charity event founded by Princess Grace in 1954, and enterain a full-house with pieces by Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti and more.

“I am so grateful that we can do this concert together in Monte-Carlo,” says Lang Lang. “I hope that our concert will give people some new inspiration. I would like to imagine that it awakens your other sense of knowing sound- and that it gives you something you never felt before.”

Syndicat des Jeux Européens boosts CSM paediatric brain cancer study with €,2000 donation

The Syndicat des Jeux Européens de la Société des Bains de Mer has thrown its support behind two important Monegasque causes: the Centre Scientifique de Monaco’s paediatric brain cancer research study and Princess Stéphanie’s Fight Aids Monaco association.

At a ceremony held in front of the Casino de Monte-Carlo on Tuesday 20th February, the Syndicat des Jeux Européens renewed its support for the works being undertaken by the Centre Scientifique de Monaco (CSM) to learn more about how, why and when brain tumours form in children with a €2,000 cheque. Another €2,000 cheque was also given to representatives of Fight Aids Monaco, which is presided over by Princess Stéphanie of Monaco.

The donation to the CSM will help fund the critical research being carried out by its Stem Cells and Brain Tumours team. Led by Dr. Vincent Picco, the team is in the midst of a study that seeks to uncover what causes brain tumours to form in children, with a particular focus on the embryonic stage.

Dr. Picco has expressed his gratitude for the renewed support, saying, “This new donation from the Syndicat des Jeux Européens will help us further refine the genetic characterisation of our research models, which are crucial for understanding paediatric cancerisation at the embryonic stage.”

Real Estate: Family homes dominate Monaco’s property market growth

Beyond the glamour, Monaco is quickly establishing itself as an excellent place to raise a family. It’s safe, the schools are top-quality, healthcare is among the best in the world and there’s a big focus on family-friendly services and events. But given the limited floor space, is there really room in Monaco to welcome families of three, four or more?

If the latest real estate report by IMSEE, Monaco’s dedicated statistical agency, is anything to go by, buyers’ needs are changing in the Principality.

Sales of studios and one-bedroom apartments, which once accounted for a large part of the market, are falling. In their place, demand for much larger properties, from three-bedroom apartments to outsized villas like those promised in the Mareterra district, is booming.

€100 million homes

Unusually for Monaco, not a single real estate development was completed in 2023. The lack of fresh listings limited new build sales last year, but off-plan purchases stepped in to bolster the sector and eventually accounted for two-thirds of the 28 confirmed new sales.

See more: The mighty Mareterra to become a reality sooner than expected

Within this portion of the market, almost half of all sales were for homes with four or more bedrooms, a group including three vast villas that are confirmed to have been sold during the first nine months of 2023. If three-bedroom new build property sales are included, that share rises to 60%.

The inflated proportion of larger family-sized homes that sold last year has had a real effect on the average property price for new builds, which rose spectacularly from €13.5 million in 2022 to €37.1 million in 2023, a near-unbelievable increase of 174.5%.

See more: Property prices at record levels in almost all Monaco neighbourhoods

“In 2023, one in two new builds was sold for more than €28 million,” confirms the IMSEE report. “Six of out of every 10 [properties] sold for more than €20 million.”

At the very highest end of the price spectrum, four new properties sold during the course of 2023 achieved sales prices in excess of €100 million.

A growing demand – and appreciation – for larger homes

In the resale market – to be understood as pre-existing properties – 388 homes sold in 2023 compared to 433 in 2022, a drop of 10%.

The sales of studio apartments and one-bedroom flats noticed the most severe declines, dropping by 15% and 23% respectively, while the value of one-bedroom homes fell too, by a not-insignificant 31.5%.

In yet another demonstration of the changing tastes of prospective homeowners in Monaco, record prices were recorded in the three-bedroom and four-bedroom-plus categories in 2023. Year-on-year from 2022, these categories swelled in price by 11.1% and 19.4% respectively.

Price per square metre soaring for family-sized property

The price per square metre data also reveals a similar competitive streak.

The average price per square metre of a three-bedroom property rose by 5.1% in 2023 to reach €56,106 – a record high.

Meanwhile, four-bedroom and up properties demanded an average price per square metre of €61,932, a climb of 18.7% year-on-year.

Demolition of illegal Château de Saint-Jeannet development has begun

More than 10 years after the first court order demanded their destruction, demolition has begun on a number of illegally built outbuildings erected at the Château de Saint-Jeannet, a historic site turned wedding venue to the north of Nice.

The iconic property was purchased by the Macedonian-British film director Jon Ascevski in the early 2000s. He soon set to work transforming the site, adding some 900m2 of new real estate. All would have been well and good had Ascevski filed for the necessary building permits – and received permission – before work began, but he didn’t.

In 2011, the law caught up with the director and he was handed a heavy fine – in the hundreds of thousands of euros – for violating the local town planning code.

It was also ordered that the outbuildings, including a 200m2 house, two pergolas, a 65m2 terrace and a 100m2 workers’ zone, be demolished.

But this demolition order was ignored until 20th February 2024, when the authorities took matters in hand and started pulling down the offending structures themselves. The job is expected to take several weeks to complete.

Confirming the move on social media, the Prefecture of the Alpes-Maritimes announced, “Following the failure to comply with a court decision ordering the demolition of non-regulatory buildings on the Château de Saint-Jeannet site, the State proceeded with the start of the demolition.”

The property, which is rumoured to have once been a Templar fortress, is a local landmark located roughly 10km northwest of Nice. Also known as the Château de la Gaude, it is now a popular venue for high-end parties and weddings.

YCM inaugurates green hydrogen pontoon, plunging further into sustainable yachting

Prince Albert II has officially launched the Monaco Yacht Club’s first floating pontoon that will be used to produce green hydrogen from renewable energy sources.

On Monday 19th February, Prince Albert inaugurated the high-tech pontoon alongside a number of government officials, including Minister for Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development Céline Caron-Dagioni and Patrice Cellario, Minister of the Interior;

The high-tech autonomous pontoon was developed by SBM Offshore engineers and is their milestone contribution to the upcoming Monaco Energy Boat Challenge.

Moored in the YCM Marina since January, the goal is to fill 30 cylinders and supply eight teams in the Energy Class with green hydrogen for the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge, which will be held from 1st to 7th July, to help reduce the event’s carbon footprint and promote the use of eco-responsible energy resources.

“An ever-increasing demand for safe, sustainable, affordable energy presents one of the biggest challenges of our time,” said Francesco Prezzo, General Manager of SBM Offshore. “As offshore pioneers, we are convinced the oceans hold the key to meeting an urgent need for low-carbon solutions, with hydrogen being part of that response.”

It is an important advancement for the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge, which is this year marking it’s 11th edition.

“It is very satisfying to see how far we have progressed,” said YCM General Secretary Bernard d’Alessandri. “Even with limited resources, it is now possible to produce green hydrogen. In line with UN Sustainable Development Goals, and under the collective ‘Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting’ approach, the Yacht Club de Monaco continues to maximise initiatives using technology to help protect our ecosystem.”

Tried and tested technology

This type of pontoon has been tested at previous editions of the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge and has undergone numerous improvements. It weighs 1.3 tonnes, has a 20m2 surface area of floating solar panels linked to twice as many batteries to produce hydrogen continuously day and night. Cylinder fill-time is now 1 litre/minute.

The pontoon also incorporates a remote control system to monitor electrolyser flow, battery charge, the heating and cooling system, as well as sensors, alarms and a dehumidifier. For the 11th Monaco Energy Boat Challenge, teams will have a choice between nine litre or 13 litre hydrogen cylinders. Each team is free to estimate its consumption according to its choice of power source with the right to produce energy during a race.

YCM as a hub of continuous innovation

During the pontoon inauguration, the YCM showcased its various environmental initiatives, including the water treatment and recycling system that has been in place since the summer of 2023. This innovative technology has been developed by Firmus Grey Water Recycling System (FGWRS), a Monaco-based company specialising in grey water and swimming pool water recycling.

Since its instalment, YCM members have been bathing in recycled water instead of drinking water as was the case before. It’s the first time this system has been installed for a pool in Monaco, where it is closely monitored by the Monegasque health authorities, and over one million litres of water have already been treated this way, equivalent to half an Olympic-size pool.

Water from the state of the art FGWRS system is also used to clean boats and to water plants, via a device called Aqua Sail, in the form of recycled water cubes. It is being used by young sailors, regatta competitors including the 400 sailors set to compete in the 40th Primo Cup in March, YCM members and YCM Marina staff, and those using the private Touch & Go pontoon.

All of these initiatives are part of the YCM’s environmental policy, which aims to get everyone thinking about the impact their choices have on our ecosystem. It’s an issue that will be at the heart of debates on Yachting Day, organised by the YCM on Thursday 21st March, during Monaco Ocean Week. A packed program will focus on exploration in collaboration with the Explorer Club based in New York, the Explorer Awards, and the Monaco Smart Yacht Rendezvous.

Art inspiring action: Philippe Pastor takes his message to St. Moritz

Monegasque artist Philippe Pastor has teamed up with the Princess Charlene Foundation and the Robilant + Voena Art Gallery for an exceptional exhibit, Bleu Pastor, that has taken the message of his latest environmental awareness-raising collection to the Alpine Swiss village of St. Moritz.

Philippe Pastor has made a name for himself not only as a talented artist, but also as a staunch eco-warrior, and this new collaboration draws together works from two of his most powerful collections.

15 pieces from the Bleu Monochrome series, each an exploration of the depths of the colour blue and employing carefully sourced raw pigments, are being showcased at St. Moritz’s Forum Paracelsus, which was once a healing and religious centre built over the area’s legendary mineral springs.

The blue-hued artworks hint at the purity and fragility of the world’s oceans and will be displayed across three rooms, with one specifically dedicated to sea ice melt.

The exhibition features 15 pieces from Pastor’s Bleu Monochrome series. Photo credit: Robilant + Voena

Nearby, at the resort’s Survetta House, an installation of sculptures from Pastor’s now-famous Les Arbres Brûlés series – a collection that remembers the devastating forest fires that tore through Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur in 2003 – can be found. Five pieces from this series are also being displayed at the Forum Paracelsus site, adding dramatic effect to an already captivating show.

The connection between the Princess Charlene Foundation and Pastor may not seem immediately apparent, but both are committed to action: the Foundation through its water safety and drowning prevention programmes that have potentially saved hundreds of lives, and the artist as a conduit between art and awareness of the environment and effecting positive change.

The exhibition will run until 29th February. Click here for more information.

Global experts to gather in Monaco for IOC World Conference on sport injury and illness prevention

Advancements at the highest levels of athlete care and sports medicine are to be explored at the upcoming IOC World Conference on Prevention of Injury and Illness in Sport, which is being held in Monaco between 29th February and 2nd March.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has long been a forerunner in promoting advancement in sports-related medicine and treatments, and the seventh edition of its dedicated World Conference on Prevention of Injury and Illness in Sport is set to highlight the latest insights and innovations that are changing how teams and their medical staff approach athlete care.

The conference promises a rich programme featuring topics such as the integration of artificial intelligence into athletes’ healthcare plans, how the safety of sportsmen and women in the more extreme disciplines can be balanced against their pushing of sports’ boundaries and the findings of new research studies on issues including mental health and respiratory illnesses.

“Every athlete knows that injury and illness are an inherent risk to any sporting career,” says Thomas Bach, IOC President. “Athletes are at the heart of the Olympic Movement, and so it is only natural that the athletes’ health is a top priority for the International Olympic Committee. The IOC World Conference on the Prevention of Injury and Illness in Sport is one expression of how the IOC always puts the health of athletes first. Bringing together leading experts and practitioners in sports medicine from around the world, this conference is an ideal platform for sharing and disseminating the latest research and best practices in the field of injury and illness prevention in sport.”

Beyond the exchange of knowledge, the conference will also provide opportunities for networking alongside interactive workshops and sessions specifically tailored to young athletes and those eager to build a career in the sports medicine field.

The IOC World Conference on Prevention of Injury and Illness in Sport will be hosted at the Grimaldi Forum.

Exploring Mayo’s rich heritage with Neal Doherty: a glimpse into Ireland’s past

Unlock the stories of Mayo, a county in the West of Ireland, with historian and tour guide Neal Doherty in an enlightening talk at the Princess Grace Irish library.

Neal Doherty, a distinguished historian, author, and tour guide, has made a transition from his corporate career to a life dedicated to exploring and sharing the rich history of Ireland. His expertise has led him to offer private tours in both French and English, focusing on the scenic west of Ireland.

A notable highlight of his tours includes Drimurla, the birthplace of Princess Grace’s grandfather, highlighting the deep historical connections in the area. In March 2023, Prince Albert II unveiled a sculpture in Newport to honour his mother’s family’s ties to the county.

Dohrty’s contributions to the field of history extend beyond guiding tours. He has authored several guidebooks, delving into the intricate details of Dublin and the Mullet Peninsula in Belmullet, and his work has not gone unnoticed, earning him appearances on the TV program Nationwide.

The pinnacle of Doherty’s efforts to share his knowledge will be showcased at the Princess Grace Irish Library on Wednesday 21st February, where he is set to captivate audiences with a presentation on Mayo’s rich history. Scheduled to begin at 7pm, the talk promises a journey through time, tracing the footsteps of John Henry Kelly, Princess Grace’s grandfather, who left in 1867, and recounting the adventures of Grace O’Malley, the formidable pirate queen.

Through Doherty’s narrative, attendees will be transported to pivotal moments in history, including the significant impact of Mayo on the global stage, the influence of St. Patrick and other saints, the region’s profound connections with France, and the remarkable victories of General Humbert during the ‘Year of the French’ in 1798.

Admission to the talk is €10 (€5 for students), cash or cheque only. For more information and ticket reservation, click here: A talk by author Neal Doherty | The Princess Grace Irish Library (pgil.mc)
