Monaco’s Anne Eastwood expands ambassadorial reach to Malta and San Marino

Since leaving her post as High Commissioner for the Protection of Rights, Freedoms and Mediation in 2022, Anne Eastwood’s career path has evolved into one of international diplomacy.

Already Ambassador of Monaco to Italy and Slovenia, the 48-year-old now adds both Malta and San Marino to her list of postings with some of the Principality’s closest and most important allies.

Eastwood first presented her Letters of Credence to President of Malta George Vella at the the Palazz tal Granmastru in Valletta on 30th January.

During a private audience, Eastwood and President Vella discussed the cordial relationship between Monaco and Malta. The two countries maintain many of the same values and interests, notably the shared beliefs in bringing about progress and actively taking part in international forums, particularly those on environmental matters.

A lunch followed at the President’s residence, the Sant’Anton Palace, where Ambassador Eastwood also had the chance to meet with Malta’s Minister of Foreign and European Affairs and Trade, Ian Borg. According to the Monaco Government, the pair discussed “avenues of cooperation” in sectors such as yachting, tourism and artificial intelligence, as well as weightier matters involving the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

The following day, Eastwood met with the President of the House of Representatives, Angelo Ferrugia, before visiting the headquarters of Epic, Malta’s top mobile telephone and communications company that has been a subsidiary of Monaco Telecom since 2020.

Then on 9th February, Eastwood headed to Monaco’s fellow microstate of San Marino to meet with Rossana Michelotti, the Honorary Consul of Monaco to San Marino, and present her Letters of Credence to Filippo Tamagnini and Gaetano Troina, the Captains Regents of the Republic of San Marino.

In a ceremony held at the Palazzo Publicco, the new Monegasque representative was welcomed by seven counterparts also taking their places as non-resident Ambassadors.

The day prior, Eastwood met with the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Luca Beccari, before a meeting with members of the San Marino Chamber of Commerce. There, the group spoke of the historical ties between the two nations, as well as the similar sizes and populations of both countries and their shared views on potential future agreements with the European Union.

Eastwood notably congratulated Director of the San Marino Financial Intelligence Agency Nicola Muccioli on his election as Chairperson of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Experts on the Evaluation of Anti-Money Laundering Measures and the Financing of Terrorism (MONEYVAL).

In conversation with young entrepreneur Ben Strautmann

With e-business entrepreneurship on an upswing, Monaco Life speaks with Ben Strautmann about creating his digital enterprise BSS Monaco.

Starting an internet-based business is one of the most prolific and rapid-developing offshoots of entrepreneurship nowadays. Digital and information technology are some of the leading tools for business, so digital entrepreneurship is seen as readily accessible to all. For those skilled in digital and information technology, it becomes the perfect podium for them to create and capitalise on present opportunities.

The 25-year-old German native, born in Luxembourg, has been residing in Monaco for the last 17 years. He is a graduate of Business Management at King’s College London and worked abroad for a few years, notably in E-Commerce at L’Oréal.

“During this time, I gained substantial knowledge and developed expertise in promoting products online, leveraging digital marketing tools and strategies to enhance brand visibility and sales,” Strautmann tells Monaco Life.

While living abroad, Strautmann was exposed to vibrant tech scenes.

“I was incredibly inspired by the many innovative solutions emerging in all kinds of industries,” he says. “My time in London and New York particularly motivated me to contribute to the technological evolution of the Principality, so I decided to establish BSS here, leveraging my education, experiences and insights gained overseas.”

It helps that he is multilingual, with an ability to conduct business in French, English and German, skills perfectly adapted to serving the international business community in the Principality and helping companies extend their reach beyond domestic boundaries.

Maximising the positives of lockdown

During the Covid lockdown, people were compelled to interact mostly through screens. The silver lining was that many young people turned to video content creation, freelancing, blogging, online teaching, making and selling music, translating and many other types of digital technology.

Strautmann belongs to Generation Z (1997-2012), the first social generation to have grown up with access to the Internet and portable digital technology from a young age. No doubt thanks to this, he has been able to find an innovative way to use his skills productively.

“After the pandemic, I returned to Monaco, where I founded my own company providing digital solutions, from web development and digital design to digital marketing strategies. I had built my first website for a client at 15,” he reveals. “I suppose I have always been tech-savvy and curious; as a result, the people in my life have tended to come to me for Internet help. So, I guess the idea came very naturally. I aim to help local businesses thrive in the digital age, adapting to the ever-changing landscape and meeting the growing demands of a tech-savvy clientele. It’s a fulfilling journey that blends innovation, problem-solving and a deep connection to my roots.”

So how does a digital-savvy Gen-Z prefer to market his business?

“Most clients contact me based on referrals from previous projects. Because I work so closely with my clients, I think it goes by word of mouth. I also like to advertise online through social media and search engines, which gives me a good online/offline balance,” he tells Monaco Life.

Staying up to date with tech trends

In this line of business, it is important to stay up to date with current technology trends, and Strautmann reveals that he does this by tuning in to his favourite podcasts, like Hard Fork, A16Z, and TechCrunch Daily Crunch.

“They’re invaluable for insights and updates,” says Strautmann.I also actively engage with various tech communities on social media and devote time to reading blog posts and articles, which helps me stay informed and inspired. As mentioned earlier, travelling to different cities has been a great source of inspiration to me, seeing how daily life and community-building are innovative and facilitated (or not!) by technology.”

The young entrepreneur says he is proud to also be an official partner of Extended Monaco, a role that allows him to contribute to Monaco’s digital development as a whole.

“I am very proud to carry out the shared goal of driving Monaco’s digital evolution, developing digital proficiency within local businesses and promoting a digital-friendly economic environment,” he shares.

So, what does he envision in five years’ time for himself and his company?

“I would refrain from being too set in my vision for the coming years. Still, as the tech landscape evolves, I hope to continue providing services at the current height and utilising the latest available advancement. I expect myself and my business to keep learning and evolving, which I find very exciting.”

Monaco Grand Prix: New floating grandstand introduced for high-end spectators

Monaco is stepping up its game for the 2024 Grand Prix, giving high-paying spectators a new floating grandstand with incredible views of the world-famous circuit.

Monaco Ports has just revealed the details of its new floating grandstand, called the Monaco Ports Lounge, which will be located in a prime position on Port Hercule with direct view on the slow-down just after the exit of the tunnel and the Chicane.

The grandstand is exclusively reserved for the guests of yachts using the Cala del Forte port in Ventimiglia and Port Hercule during the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, offering another layer of luxury service during the world’s most prestigious F1 racing event.

The new addition has been welcomed by events companies.

“Monaco is such an iconic event, not only for Formula 1, but also for the city itself. Any opportunities to diversify and increase viewing opportunities at different price points, and to accommodate different interests, will be great for the event, for guests and for Monaco,” says Julie Hunter, Owner and Operations Director of Ultimate Driving Tours, a company which has been chartering yachts in Port Hercule for the Monaco Grand Prix since 2013.

The new Monaco Ports Lounge will be located in a prime position on Port Hercule. Image source: Ports de Monaco communication

The new Monaco Ports Lounge is a step-up from the normal grand stands. It will have a surface area of 600 m2, spread over three levels, and a capacity of 400 people. VIP guests will be able to enjoy drinks and snacks, as well as services like toilets and Wi-Fi.

Lunch is also possible at the Société Nautique restaurant located 200 metres away alongside the Yacht Club de Monaco.

But these prime seats don’t come cheap. Three-day packages are priced at €4,800 for customers berthed at Cala del Forte, and €5,400 for those in Monaco.

The new floating grandstand is the latest move by Monaco to increase revenue intake from the Grand Prix. Last year, it increased the price paid per guest attending the event on a yacht berthed in Port Hercule. This year, the new stand alone could generate over €2 million.

Ticket requests for the Monaco Ports Lounge can be made at grandprix@ports-monaco.com.

Printemps des Arts 2024: what to expect from the opening days of the festival

With just two weeks to go until Monaco’s 2024 Printemps des Arts festival begins, Monaco Life delves into the rich and eclectic programming organised for the first few days of this month-long event.

Under the title of ‘Ma fin est mon commencement’, the upcoming edition of Printemps des Arts de Monte-Carlo is set to embrace the thought-provoking theme of the cycles of life under the guidance of Artistic Director Bruno Mantovani from 13th March to 7th April.

As always, the programme, which can be found here, will continue the festival’s tradition of blending the classical with the contemporary while placing a strong emphasis on making the arts more accessible to young audiences by offering free admission to all concerts for individuals under 25 years of age.

The festival begins with a concert on Wednesday 13th March at the Église de Saint-Charles by the Ensemble Gilles Binchois. The group will perform Johannes Ockeghem’s Requiem, the earliest recorded mass for the dead, ahead of a recital by Nice-born Sandro Compagnon, who will be taking on a range of modern saxophone pieces by Luciano Berio and Mantovani.

Continuing the exploration of beginnings and endings, one of the highlights of the following day will see the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo on stage at the Auditorium Rainier III. Under Fabien Gabel, the orchestra will juxtapose Richard Strauss’ early symphonic work Aus Italien with the later introspective Four Last Lieder.

On Friday 15th March, at One Monte-Carlo, the festival will spotlight the diverse spectrum of classical music with a performance by the trio of Sayaka Shoji, Henri Demarquette and Jean-Frédéric Neuburger. They will journey through Beethoven’s work, from his initial compositions to the iconic Archduke Trio, to illustrate the progression of Beethoven’s genius.

Check out McLaren’s new hybrid convertible the Artura Spider

Slated for delivery in Monaco mid-2024, McLaren Automotive has unveiled the new Artura Spider, combining an open-air driving experience with its high-performance hybrid.

The Artura, celebrated for its V6 hybrid technology, has already made waves in the automotive world by blending high performance with eco-friendly design. It was voted the best hybrid car by the Association Médias Auto et Moto française in 2023 and featured at Top Marques Monaco last year, setting the stage for McLaren’s next big reveal.

The new Artura Spider marks McLaren’s entry into the hybrid convertible market. It keeps the core qualities of the original Artura but includes significant improvements like a stronger engine with 700PS (690bhp). Even with these upgrades, the Spider variant remains fast and agile, now offering the option to drive with the roof down.

“More power, more dynamic performance”

“We have upgraded the powertrain and the chassis systems to deliver more power, more dynamic performance, and even higher levels of connection with the driver – without any compromise in everyday driving,” says Michael Leiters, CEO of McLaren Automotive. “And now alongside the new Artura coupe, we have the Artura Spider, a new convertible that has all of these improvements and brings another dimension of open-air McLaren supercar exhilaration to our range.”

A standout feature of the Artura Spider is its classification as the lightest convertible supercar in its category, a factor that contributes to its performance metrics. It boasts a power-to-weight ratio of 480PS/tonne and can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 3.0 seconds. Meanwhile, the convertible top folds down in 11 seconds and works during speeds of up to 50km/h.

Monaco Life has learned that the Artura Spider is currently available for order in Monaco and is slated for delivery starting mid-2024. McLaren also aims to feature the vehicle at the upcoming Top Marques 2024, scheduled from 5th to 9th June, although final confirmation is pending.

Ski resorts across the Southern Alps issue avalanche warnings

Following consecutive days of heavy snowfall in the mountains, weather forecaster Météo France, along with regional authorities in the Alpes du Sud, has issued high-level avalanche warnings for numerous ski resorts in the south of France.

According to the weather service, numerous spontaneous avalanches described as medium to large in size are to be expected in the coming days due to the instability of the snowpack.

Given the particularly heavy snowfall in the Mercantour range, which has been coupled with a strong northeasterly wind, Météo France has warned that road access to popular destinations such as Isola 2000 may also be threatened by avalanches.

Avalanche bombing and blasting is taking place on a daily basis in many of the region’s resorts in a bid to limit the threat to those out on the snow, but warnings remain high, often at a 4/5 level.

See more: Explained: The rules about snow tyres and chains in France

Those out on the slopes are encouraged to follow all signage and avoid travelling off-piste.

“Drifts forming in fresh wind-blow snow [are] easily triggered by a single skier, even far from ridges,” warns Météo France’s mountain report. “They are sometimes tricky [to detect] because they have a powdery appearance.”

The daily updated Météo France’s mountain report can be found here.

Inside the utopian design classes at Monaco’s École Saint Charles

For the last five months, students at the École Saint Charles have been collectively designing and building pieces of ergonomic furniture in a bid to foster creativity and cooperation between pupils.

Since September, CM1 pupils and their teachers at the École Saint Charles on Avenue Saint Laurent have been immersed in a hands-on design project dubbed Écoletopie.

The brainchild of Studio Smarin in Nice and put in place in Monaco thanks to a collaboration between the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, the Department of National Education, Youth and Sports, and the Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco, Écoletopie is the natural extension of a 2022 exhibit at the Centre Pompidou in Metz that was entitled The Art of Learning, A School of Creators.

It calls on schoolchildren to create a ‘total environment’ following four main objectives: the mobilisation of attention, collective intelligence, the exercise of sensitivity and body awareness. The Studio Smarin website describes the project as having a “utopian vision” and as a space that allows children to play and invent.

Écoletopie in Monaco

The pupils in Monaco were asked to collectively agree on design projects to undertake then to draw up plans and construct furniture pieces from a range of exclusively natural materials, such as oak panels, cork blocks and wooden dowels.

CM1 pupils and teachers at the École Saint Charles spent five months working on the Écoletopie project. Photo credit: Manuel Vitali / Monaco Communications Department

The project covered every stage of the process, from conception to clean-up, and sought to encourage the students to embrace roles of leadership and the art of working cohesively as a team.

The final results produced were diverse – some practical, some decorative – but each demonstrated the application of heart, soul and imagination in creating a thought-provoking piece.

Alongside encouraging teamwork and creativity, other goals of the Écoletopie project included: enhancing body and mood awareness, developing self-confidence and concentration skills, and teaching students how it feels to have completed “a job well done”.

Explained: The rules about snow tyres and chains in France

Snowfall is expected throughout this week and into the next, providing perfect conditions for the thousands of families heading into the mountains for a spot of skiing during the school holidays. But before you head off, it is important to check that your vehicle is correctly equipped for the road.

Until 31st March, it is obligatory for all vehicles with four or more wheels in mountainous areas in France to be fitted with winter tyres on all wheels or to carry the correct-sized snow chains or socks for at least two tyres.

Details on the correct form of winter tyres has been published on the French Public Service website and can be viewed, in French, here

According to the website, the term ‘winter tyres’ covers all tyres that are marked with M+S, M.S, M&S or the alpine symbol known as 3PMSF (3 Peak Mountain Snow Flake) alongside an MS variation. All season or four weather tyres are not considered acceptable if they don’t have one of the previously mentioned symbols.

From 1st November 2024, only tyres with the 3PMSF option will be accepted as winter tyres.

Rock and roll muse Pattie Boyd to auction treasures from her storied past

Pattie Boyd, the woman who inspired love songs written by both George Harrison and Eric Clapton, has teamed up with Christie’s to auction an intriguing array of personal effects, from jewellery and clothing to love letters and treasured photographs.

Pattie Boyd, a top British model of the 1960s, has the distinction of having stolen the hearts of two legendary greats from the world of music. Married first to Beatle George Harrison and then to guitar idol Eric Clapton, Boyd was both the muse for Harrison’s classic tune Something and Clapton’s hit songs Layla and Wonderful Tonight

In March, she is set to sell off a collection of 116 items hailing from her incredible past at an auction orchestrated by Christie’s.

“I’m happy to let go of these things which I have treasured and loved for so many years,” says Boyd ahead of the sale. “These items represent special moments in my life, but now I think it’s time to move on and share what I have with others.”

TREASURES FROM 1960S AND 1970S

Among the treasures being auctioned are a selection of photographs with Boyd both in front of and behind the camera. Included are: a black and white image from 1968 of Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and John Lennon in Rishikesh, India that was taken by Boyd; a polaroid snap of Eric Clapton playing guitar in 1977; a picture taken by Boyd of she and Harrison in their garden at Kinfauns, England in 1968; and an image of a rather solemn-looking Boyd taken by The Beatle’s photographer Robert Whitaker at her Surrey home. The various photos are anticipated to fetch between £800 and £6,000 (€935 to €7,000) at auction.

Also in the collection are: love letters written to Boyd from Harrison and Clapton; the original artwork La jeune fille au bouquet by Emile Frandsen De Schomberg that was used for the cover of the Derek and The Dominos’ album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, which is estimated to sell for between £40,000 to £60,000 (€47,000 to €70,000); and lyrics for songs and set lists written by her famous husbands.

Fans can also expect a stunning selection of jewellery and watches, such as an Art Déco diamond bracelet-watch with an estimated going price of £4,000 to £6,000 (€4,700 to €7,000), as well as vintage 1960s clothing from The Fool Collective, which is expected to sell in the £800 to £1,500 (€935 to €1,750) range.

“Pattie Boyd’s extraordinary life and career chart some of the key moments of the cultural revolution that changed the world in the 1960s,” says Adrian Hume-Sayer, Director of Private & Iconic Collections and Head of Sale at Christie’s London. “This unique collection includes an array of cherished personal letters, photographs and mementoes, which provide a tangible link to that amazing time.”

Yachting: Nomination stage launched for The Honours 2024

Taking place within the context of the Monaco Yacht Show, The Honours are a celebration of inspiring individuals at the frontline of change in the superyachting industry. Nominations have officially opened for the Class of 2024 and here is all the information you need on how to get involved.

The superyacht industry’s image is evolving as it embraces a role as an innovator of sustainable maritime practices and as a source of incredible philanthropic ventures. To champion the efforts of those pushing the boundaries of the sector, the Monaco Yacht Show launched The Honours in 2023.

The awards take the focus off the magnificent boats and put it on the people who are living and working on board these glamourous vessels with the goal of sharing their stories and shining a light on the amazing things they are doing behind the scenes.

From a deckhand working with indigenous peoples to help offset climate change issues to a scientist pursuing marine studies and research or a yacht owner who is doing their bit to make the luxury sector more eco-friendly, there are people throughout the industry who have been quietly doing good and deserve recognition.

See more: MYS: The Honours yachting awards champion three inspiring individuals

The second edition of The Honours will be held during the 2024 Monaco Yacht Show, scheduled for 25th to 28th September in Port Hercule, but the nomination stage for the awards has already begun begun.

The candidates need not be from any specific background or fall into any certain category, but they must have demonstrated “concrete achievements” in fields such as diversity, sustainability, innovation, research and philanthropy that are linked to superyachting during the last five years.

The organisers of The Honours – the Monaco Yacht Show and the Superyacht Life Foundation – stress that nominees will be judged based on their accomplishments and not the number of times they have been put forwards for an award. As such, the emphasis of a nomination should be on the person’s “impact, originality, creativity and commitment to making a positive difference” in the sector.

To submit a name, simply click here and fill out a short form describing why the person being suggested should be considered as well as adding any details, anecdotes or stories related to their achievements that you deem pertinent.

After the selection process is complete, a gala award ceremony will be held to announce the winners later in the year.

Submissions will be accepted until 1st April.

Between 22nd and 23rd February, scientists and key decision-makers from across the globe gathered at the Musée Océanographique de Monaco to discuss the state of the polar regions as well as what can be done to protect these vitally important parts of our world.

Following opening addresses from the president of International Arctic Science Committee, Henry Burgess, and the vice-president of Finance at the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research, Jefferson Cardia Simões, on the first day of the event, Monaco’s own Prince Albert took to the stage.

The Monegasque sovereign, a life-long devotee of ocean conservation and awareness, used his time behind the podium to stress the importance of involving indigenous voices in polar talks and of respecting their unique experiences in these regions.

“We need to implement as widely as possible the only measures we know are effective, which consist of marking out targeted exclusion zones, adapted to the current threats and likely to have a real impact in terms of protection and regeneration,” said the Prince. “We need to do this together, by pooling our expertise, by using up-to-date knowledge, and by listening to the needs and competencies of the indigenous populations too, especially in the Arctic. More than ever before, they need to be fully involved in these discussions and decisions. This is what we will be focusing on over the next two days, which for all these reasons will, I believe, be particularly invaluable.”

Highlights of the event included keynote speeches from Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, the chairman of Arctic Circle, and Doctor Frederik Paulsen, the founder of the Albédo Foundation for the Crysophere, as well as a fascinating panel discussion on long-term collaborations in the polar regions, which echoed the words of Monaco’s Prince Albert. This round of talks featured esteemed speakers such as Sara Olsvig, Larry Hinzman, Antje Boetius and Jane Francis.

The FPA2 also secured a strategic partnership with the European Polar Board during the event.

According to a spokesperson for the FPA2, “This collaboration aims to amplify awareness of polar challenges and jointly orchestrate events, particularly within the framework of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Sciences.”
