Alain Ducasse and Simon Rogan concoct made-to-measure menu for the Festival des Étoilés

The two chefs promise “a journey from England’s Lake District to the Mediterranean coast” on 20 April.

It is THE culinary event in the Principality. Le Festival des Étoilés, organised by the Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer (SBM), is back again this year, much to the delight of fine dining enthusiasts. The principle is simple: the Principality’s renowned – and Michelin-starred – chefs invite a chef from abroad to create a special ‘four hands menu’. The celebrity guest who will be teaming up with Alain Ducasse has been announced: Simon Rogan, Chef at the three-starred L’Enclume restaurant in the UK’s Lake District.

The two men should get on well, since they share the same culinary vision: committed and responsible, capturing the very essence of the local terroir. Simon Rogan cultivates vegetables, herbs, fruit and flowers on his farm for his authentic restaurant: a blacksmith’s workshop dating from the 13th century. In Monaco, Alain Ducasse draws his inspiration from the Mediterranean and pays particular heed to seasonality.

The two chefs are on a shared quest for the ideal flavour, and will be putting together a ‘cross-fertilised’ lunch and dinner menu as part of the festival. Book now! Chef Marcel Ravin will be teaming up with chef David Toutain, Dominique Lory with Yoann Conte and Yannick Alléno with Richard Lee, and the festival will conclude with a gala event at the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo in October.

Refuels in Monaco without paying: a month’s suspended sentence

The defendant’s explanation was surprising to say the least.

Despite being absent from the Criminal Court of Monaco on the day of the trial, the accused, an Armenian citizen in his thirties, managed to make the magistrates smile several times. Reading out the events that occurred in December 2023, the court’s President Florestan Bellinzona said: “The gentleman turned up at the petrol station on Charles III Boulevard by the roundabout near the border with Cap-d’Ail. He refuelled,  entered the shop where payment normally takes place, and immediately left again.”

140 euros outstanding

Quickly apprehended by Police Department officers, the person put forward a rather disconcerting explanation. He stated that he suffers from a urinary tract infection and that he needed to relieve himself immediately. According to the police report, he also stated that he intended to pay the outstanding amount, some 140 euros, give or take.

The officers therefore accompanied the tourist back to the petrol station. At first, he tried to pay with a card that was rejected, then protested about the amount, “much too expensive” for his taste. And finally, with a certain aplomb, he suggested giving the fuel back! Given the man’s clean record in France or Monaco, the court agreed to prosecutor Julien Pronier’s request, and pronounced a suspended prison sentence of one month.

Princess Charlene visits child psychiatry unit in Beausoleil

The fully refurbished 650 m2 building is located on Avenue du Professeur Langevin.

The Princess visited the completely renovated building along with Prince Albert II, several Monegasque ministers, the Mayor of Beausoleil, Gérard Spinelli, Romain Alexandre, Departmental Director of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Regional Health Agency (ARS PACA) and a delegation from the Fondation Lenval.

The work carried out will enable comprehensive outpatient day care for children and adolescents with severe developmental, personality and autistic spectrum disorders, up to the age of 18.

The Prince and Princess were able to meet and talk to the staff on site, who explained how the facility works, with multidisciplinary care enabling specialists to have a deeper insight into the child concerned, for a more accurate assessment.

There are 35 places, 17 of which are reserved for children who live or attend school in the Principality. Children and teenagers living or attending school in the Principality who suffer from these disorders can only be admitted to this new facility if referred by a child psychiatrist from Monaco’s Centre Plati, the medical and psychological centre for children and teenagers under the authority of the Direction de l’Action Sanitaire (DASA).

Christophe Robino points out that “this outpatient facility is the result of close cooperation between the Governments of Monaco and the French Republic, as well as the municipality of Beausoleil and the Fondation Lenval. At the heart of the initiative is a commitment to the well-being and development of every child. To provide a safe, inclusive and therapeutic environment where every child can thrive, thanks to experts and programmes that are tailored to each individual. The aim is to work along with the families to provide holistic and sustainable local support to the children who need it.”

Chiens de Cœur non-profit charms Rainier III Centre

Sabine and Patrick Thienpont, two Monegasque residents, founded the Chiens de Cœur non-profit 11 years ago, and it has been a great success.

Since 2013, the charity’s volunteers, accompanied by their dogs, have been making weekly visits to nursing homes and medical facilities in the Principality. The aim is to cheer people up with the company of these much-loved fur balls.

The charity comes to the Rainier III Centre at the Princess Grace Hospital (CHPG) every fortnight and makes a real, positive impact. Speaking to Monaco Info, Guillaume Socci, executive assistant at the Rainier III Centre, is proud of this long-standing partnership: “I would really like to pay tribute to our partnership with the Chiens de Cœur non-profit, which carries out its voluntary work, as the name suggests, with a great deal of heart and energy, because it is extremely beneficial for our patients.”

Staff notice that the dogs’ visits help to improve patients’ mental health. In fact, there are improvements immediately after the sessions as well as in the long-term, according to  neuropsychologist Céline Baert: “Aside from well-being, we’ve seen that from a neuropsychological point of view, patients had fewer behavioural issues after the session. These are things that we have been able to measure objectively using psychometric tests, and we have seen real results.”

The charity currently visits 5 Monegasque facilities and is delighted with its growing and enduring success. For more information, head over to their website.

Swimming prohibited at Larvotto for about three weeks

The beach is getting a spring facelift!

Reprofiling work will be carried out from 15 April to 3 May 2024. Please note that swimming will be prohibited during this time.  However, sun worshippers will still have access to certain sections of the beach as the work progresses. Site hours will be 7.30 am until noon and from 2 pm to 6.30 pm. Restaurants and shops at the complex will also remain open.

The aim of the operation is to level off the slope that has built up over the winter, restoring “a profile to the beach that guarantees sufficient capacity and safe access to the bathing areas,” according to a press release.

On the environmental side, the government assures us that: “the operation will be accompanied by the installation of 120m long retaining nets on the water, along the breakwaters. This will protect the adjacent underwater reserve from any sediment created by the reprofiling.”

For information, regular maintenance will be carried out throughout the season to maintain the width and gentle slope of the beach, without the need for any further closures.

Where to enjoy Monaco Grand Prix, if not in the stands

On the weekend of the Monaco Grand Prix, many spectators and Formula 1 enthusiasts manage to enjoy the spectacle and atmosphere of the race, without buying a ticket! This year it’s the weekend of May 23 to 26.

During the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, it’s often all about coming first. First over the finish line for the drivers and first to the best spots for the spectators. From Thursday to Sunday, the day of the race, the crowds grow exponentially. As you arrive at Monaco station, you will be screened by a heavy security presence. Once you are through that, head up to the Rocher district, where you may be able to see some of the track’s bends. Many people head there every year, but you need to be an early bird if you want to be at the front of the railings. Although it is very far from the track itself, the spot affords an all-round view and you will still hear the roar of the cars echoing around the Principality.

For fans who would like to follow the race lilve and for free, it is always broadcast in the Fanzone at the La Condamine Market. There will also be plenty of entertainment there over the course of the weekend. You can meet the drivers, try out the Formula 1 simulator, buy a souvenir… It’s a great way to soak up the event’s atmosphere.

Another low(er)-cost way to enjoy the Grand Prix is in one of the different Monegasque restaurants that are open over the May weekend. Many of them show the race or qualifications on screens. But again, the tables are often booked in advance and are quickly sold out.

At Port Hercule, where the race starts, several restaurants promote their proximity to the Monaco Grand Prix. L’Escale for example, located just a few metres from Boulevard Albert I and the famous F1 racing cars. Not far from there, the Quai des Artistes also has a breathtaking view. As expected, lunch reservations for the restaurant are fully booked for the May weekend. The same goes for Caffè Milano.

Others run special Grand Prix deals, such as the Botticelli. At the heart of the circuit, the restaurant offers a direct view of the Sainte Dévote bend and the climb to the Casino. It has a capacity of 300 seats and offers an exclusive package with a ticket, your meal and of course the view. Book early to avoid disappointment as the saying goes. Take your pick!

Paris 2024 Olympics: Alain Ducasse dons his apron for a gala dinner

It will take place the day before the opening ceremony, under the Louvre pyramid.

The chef is leaving the kitchen at Monaco’s Louis XV, voted second-best restaurant in the world, for Paris, and a dinner for around a hundred heads of state and VIPs on 25 July. Invited by the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Élysée, distinguished guests will be treated to an exceptional menu concocted by the chef and his teams for the «President’s Dinner», which was first held in 2014 in Sochi, Russia.

Gastronomic diplomacy

Three takeaways from AS Monaco’s crushing win over Metz

AS Monaco claimed a sensational 2-5 triumph away against Metz to extend their unbeaten run in Ligue 1 to five matches and ensure they remain third in the standings.

In a game littered with positives, Les Monegasques prevailed in superb fashion over the struggling Metz, with their outstanding start proving the catalyst for a thumping win.

With this in mind, this gives us the opportunity to focus on three takeaways from this encounter.

Golovin dictates proceedings superbly from deep

Deployed in a deeper midfield role alongside Youssouf Fofana, Aleksandr Golovin enjoyed a major influence on proceedings and was a constant thorn in the side of Metz.

Showcasing his tactical flexibility, intelligence and technical qualities emphatically, the little magician was vital in breathing life into ASM’s attack with his playmaking wizardry.

Monaco’s average position graphic

Relishing that extra time and space that operating in deeper areas affords him, his distribution skills helped give Monaco control while elevating their offensive threat immensely.

Golovin’s Pass Map

Indeed, his sublime assist for Vanderson’s goal served as a testament to his aptitude in possession, where he perfectly obliged the Brazilian’s run to ensure he was ideally placed to fire home his volley with aplomb.

Golovin’s superb assist

Also helping his team with his smart movement to find space and form numerical and positional superiorities, this, in combination with his mazy dribbling and solid defensive contribution, amplified his worth.

Golovin’s Heat Map

By the numbers, his 90 completed passes at 94%, 19 accurate passes into the final third, 13 of 15 made long passes, three dribbles, two shot assists, 10 ball recoveries and four interceptions illustrated his tremendous contribution.

A real joy to watch and bringing so much to the table as always, Golovin’s impact was unquestionably a key element towards the success. Watch for him to be similarly influential in the crucial sprint to the finish line in Ligue 1.

Balogun’s brilliant brace off the bench

Fresh from winning the Nations League with the USMNT, Folarin Balogun carried this momentum over beautifully by coming off the bench to bag a brilliant brace for Les Monegasques.

Balogun’s opener
Balogun’s second goal
Balogun’s goal map

Interestingly, Balogun’s double saw him become the first USMNT player to bag two goals as a substitute in a single match in Europe’s top five leagues since Charlie Davies for Sochaux in August 2009, as per Opta.

Having mixed the highs and the lows this campaign since joining in a £35 million deal from Arsenal in the summer, this will be a massive confidence boost for the gifted forward, who will be desperate to start as many games as possible to close out the campaign.

“I had a conversation with him yesterday to explain my decision to start Eliesse and Maghnes as 10s and Takumi ahead of them in a second striker role. He’s a smart player, I’m very happy that he was able to score two goals today,” explained Adi Hutter.

Now up to eight goals in 22 games across all competitions following these instinctive finishes, watch for him to use this as a springboard for the all-important run home to end his first term in the French Riviera in style.

Masterful away form continues

Monaco’s sensational triumph over Metz meant they carried on their incredible away form this term, which has seen them bank 28 points to give them the second best road record in Ligue 1 behind only Paris Saint-Germain (31), as they crushed the struggling Maroons.

Monaco’s away form

Getting off to a blistering start by scoring three goals within the opening 16 minutes, this gave them the perfect platform to achieve such a great result inside the Stade Saint-Symphorien.

Unfazed by the crowd and sticking to their game plan, this match was a testament to what a force to be reckoned with this team are when fully focused and firing.

The challenge will now be translating this exceptional form away from the Stade Louis II, where they’ve underwhelmed of late, to their crunch home match with Rennes next weekend, which will be crucial in their pursuit of Champions League qualification.

With seven games left to play, combining their elite away form with an uptick at home will be essential if they’re to achieve their stated aim.

Ligue 1: Five-star AS Monaco breeze past Metz

AS Monaco continued their terrific away form by brushing aside Metz 2-5 to propel themselves into second in the Ligue 1 standings.

The Match

Choosing an extremely attacking team for this encounter that featured a nice blend of youth and experience, Adi Hutter’s selection proved to be spot on.

@ASM

Racing out to the perfect start, Les Monegasques scorched to the lead in just the fourth minute when Takumi Minamino found the back of the net with an instinctive finish.

They didn’t waste much time doubling their advantage, for Maghnes Akliouche capped off a slick transition with a cool finish shortly after.

Radoslaw Majecki was then called into action, producing a smart save to deny Georges Mikautadze, before Monaco struck again, this time through Vanderson, who slammed home a wicked volley following Aleksandr Golovin’s masterful assist.

Dominating and right on top inside the Stade Saint-Symphorien, Wissam Ben Yedder and Ismail Jakobs were next to have a go, but their efforts were off the mark.

Picking up where they left off, Les Rouge et Blanc started the second stanza with some promising attempts by Minamimo and Golovin.

Doing a great job of limiting their opponents while still looking dangerous, the introduction of Folarin Balogun gave ASM a nice boost, as the USMNT star rapidly stamped his mark by scoring in the 76th minute.

Metz valiantly responded by bagging two quickfire goals courtesy of Papa Diallo and Ibou Sane to give themselves a glimmer of hope in the final stages. But Balogun rubber stamped the result in style by grabbing Monaco’s fifth, and his second, to ensure his team ran out 2-5 winners.

Hutter’s Debrief

“First of all, I would like to congratulate the team for this victory against Metz, because it is never easy to win here. It was a successful match, particularly in the first half, where we played perfectly, and especially in the first quarter of an hour,” explained.

“The team had prepared well all week, we spent time analysing our opponent and it’s fantastic to see how my players were able to demonstrate it on the pitch. Whether in high pressing or on a technical level, I’m really happy with those first fifteen minutes, it’s a great victory for us.”

Key Stats

By the numbers, the fact ASM held the ascendancy in terms of total shots (17 to 13), shots inside the box (14 to 10), possession (64% to 36%), big chances created (6 to 3), passes in the opposition half (343 to 121) and tackles won (21 to 9) illustrated they were good value for the victory.

Up Next

After this exceptional outcome, Monaco will now quickly turn their attention to their colossal upcoming home clash with Rennes, where they’ll be keen to extend their unbeaten league streak to six and further stake their claim for a coveted Champions League place.

“We’ve been here since the start of the season, and I don’t see why that would change. So we’re going to play our cards to the end. We are in a marathon, but each match is at the same time a final. There are seven left, and we will have to scratch as many points as possible everywhere. My goal is to bring AS Monaco back to the Champions League,” insisted Youssouf Fofana.

Record donation by Association des Amis du Musée Océanographique de Monaco

The ‘Amis du Musée Océanographique de Monaco’ (AAMOM – Friends of the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco)  have been actively promoting the museum since 2011.

A record sum to fund the development of remarkable projects! €351,414 is the amount donated to the museum by the Friends of the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco. The cheque presentation ceremony, attended by members of the AAMOM Board of Directors and the Director of the Institut Océanographique, was a joyful occasion for all concerned.

Ambitious projects

The donation will provide significant support for three Oceanographic Museum projects, chosen by the AAMOM. The initiatives focus on three major areas: education, heritage conservation and the protection of marine species.

One, a revolutionary initiative in partnership with Daxtachem, aims to improve the health of aquarium fish by examining the microbiological quality of the water and developing wound-healing dressings for fish and sharks. Another is a project to restore old books, including 1,200 precious works, is being undertaken to combat fungus and therefore ensure their conservation. Finally, the ‘Océano Pour Tous’  programme provides a vital educational opportunity for underprivileged young people, through an educational competition and workshops at the museum.

“It’s important to have diversified projects, with technical, educational and heritage-oriented initiatives. It’s always good to have a concrete result. It shows that the capital raised is worthwhile, that it’s not money that’s just sitting in the bank, but that it’s there to support the museum’s activities,” says Anthony Torriani, vice-president of AAMOM.

The oldest works that have been restored and preserved by the Oceanographic Institute date from the 16th century – ©Federic Pacorel / Musée Océanographique de Monaco

A unique bond with the Museum

“The Friends of the Museum organisation is first and foremost a meeting of friends,” says Robert Calcagno, President of the Institut Océanographique. The AAMOM’s members all have at least one thing in common: a passion for the oceans and a strong bond with the Oceanographic Museum as an institution. Throughout the year, the association works to keep the museum running and raise the funds it needs to develop. Its members, volunteers and donors are all driven by this objective.

Whether you wish to give of your time or contribute financially, the organisation is open to new members who share the same passion. “We’re looking for volunteers for our museum exploration and fundraising activities,”  says Anthony Torriani. “We have between 40 and 50 volunteers in total, and we’re always looking for more. But we’re happy to see that the association’s determination is shared by others. (…) It’s incredible, these are people who already have busy lives. But they have to get up on a Sunday morning, be here to welcome visitors, be enthusiastic and share their love of the museum.”

In terms of activities, there are three key events on the association’s calendar this year:

  • The Summer party: “a party for the association’s members, where we inform them about the projects that have been carried out, and how the funds are used. It will take place during the Monaco fireworks display.”
  • The ‘fête du musée‘ (museum festival): “In 2023, around 44,000 people came to the museum. It’s an opportunity for everyone to discover the museum and share our passion for the oceans.”
  • The Charity Gala: “Every year there’s a theme, but we haven’t decided on this year’s yet. The Gala is very important for us, it represents around half of our donations.”

If you are interested in the Friends’ activities, keep an eye out for news. And if you wish to join the Friends and play an active part with its members, head over to the association’s website.

The role and duties of the Police Department were discussed, and the meeting also provided an opportunity to talk about residents and their concerns, namely residence permit renewals, changes of status and residence certificates.

As Alexandre Boin, Director of the CREM, told Monaco Info: “We have a lot of new residents, and the event was an opportunity for them to meet the Police Department. The conference is proof of the close ties that exist in Monaco between the authorities and the local population.”
